Preferences>Appearance allows one to select a font for the synopsis. However, the font in the synopsis is unchanged no matter what I select. Is this right??

I think that setting only affects the font for when the synopsis is displayed in Outliner, not when it’s in the Inspector.
I think you probably need the ‘Index Cards Text’ setting in Preferences > Corkboard. (The synopsis text is identical to the front of the index card.)
