Syntax highlighting

Text editors like Notepad++ and Atom have a feature called Syntax Highlighting (I’m sure you know). In particular, it colours differently everything in between quotes. I think this would be a very useful feature for writing fiction.

I don’t know if it has a use in publication, but it’s fantastic for re-writing dialogue. It makes it easy to focus on dialogue or description, depending on what you are working on. I’ve been trying it out, using atom for a few days, and it’s really useful.

It looks as follows:

I imagine one could go further and have colours for character names, places and keywords.

This is already part of Scrivener 3 (which in fact fades other text around dialogue so that you can focus on the dialogue). This is already available in Scrivener 3 for macOS and is coming in Scrivener 3 for Windows - I believe it’s already part of the Scrivener 3 for Windows betas.

All the best,
Keith

Is this only for dialog, or can the user tweak it somehow to do other things, like character names?

It’s only for dialogue.
