Template Files

Are there any guidance notes available covering the creation of template files for Scrivener 2.0? I would like to create a coule of templates and include thumbnail images and descriptions.

Are there any sources for additional templates such as engineering documents/reports?

Check out the manual under the Help menu and search for templates; there’s an excellent short section that should give you all you need to know. The basic process is incredibly simple: set up a project the way you want your future projects with this new template to start, choose File>Save as Template… and there you type in your description and choose your icon.

As for other templates, Keith’s planning to release some others sometime in the next month (but I’m not quoting just in case!) and I believe a thread may get started in the forum at some point for user-posted templates, or some other user-template gallery. Not sure on that, but I think it got mentioned by Ioa or Keith somewhere. (Sorry, my brain’s tired.) People meanwhile used to toss up templates for earlier versions in various threads in the forum, so if no thread gets dedicated to that, I’m sure people will still put them out there and a little searching may work, once people have had a chance to play with 2.0.

Give us a chance!

Actually one thing we would like to do in the future is provide a page for users to share templates.

On top of MimeticMouton’s advice about reading the section in the manual on templates, also take a look at the placeholder tags list (also available from the Help menu), which gives you a list of all the variables you can place into templates, which will automatically be replaced with user information.

At some point I hope to put together a video showing how to make a template, too, but it will probably be a few weeks before I get chance. In the meantime, feel free to ask here or drop us a line with any questions you have.

Thanks,
Keith

Thanks for the good advice. I should perhaps have been clearer that I was looking for pre-existing material on templates that would still apply to 2.0. I didn’t really expect there to be material for 2.0 yet.

The template exchange idea sounds wonderful as I did try searching the forum last night but with no success. I also use OmniGraffle and find the Graffletopia site is a great resource for new stencils so something that works along those lines would be very valuable I think.

That’s the sort of thing we’d like to do. It just takes a bit of setting up and we would have to be careful that no one places copyrighted material up there (scriptwriting or how-to methods and so on). The templates have been radically changed for 2.0 to be much easier to create, customise, maintain and find, so any pre-existing information would probably not be of much use in this case.

One tip, though: you can hold down the Option key when you click on “Create” to create a project from an existing template, and then keep the Option key held down until the project is created. If you do this, the variables in the project won’t get replaced, so you’ll be able to see the “<$template…” tags I’ve used for various elements; it’s also useful for editing a template you’ve created if you’ve trashed the original project.

Thanks,
Keith
