I’m running the latest Scrivener on my Mac and iPhone, using sync through Dropbox. I’ve typically had no problems with this setup and my projects tend to be small/basic in structure.
I’ve noticed that when I add a new document to my Draft folder in my project on my Mac and then sync it down to my iPhone, something odd and temporary happens…
After the sync on the iPhone, on the main page of the Scrivener app, I navigate into my Project > Draft folder and see that the latest document that I just synced down is not listed there. It is only after I navigate out of the Draft folder and then navigate back into it that the new document will appear in the list in the Draft folder. This happens every time I sync…I have to go into, out of, and back into the Draft folder to make the latest documents appear.
I’ve looked at the Dropbox Troubleshooting Guide and bug/technical support lists and have not found anything that mentions this. Does anyone else have this problem, and is there a fix coming for it?
No, I did not close the project on the Mac first…I remember reading somewhere that is not necessary for syncing. Note that the sync does work correctly…it has never produced an error…the problem is having to go out and then back into the Draft folder in IOS to make the added files show up. They never just show up on their own after a sync.
No, you don’t have to close the project on the Mac, but in that case you need to be very careful with each step. Make sure that the dropbox app has synced everything from the Mac to the Dropbox server, download changes to your iPhone, when you are done, upload (sync) from the iPhone to the Dropbox server and when you return to your Mac it should ask if you want to sync. You must NOT work on the project on both devices simultaneously.
Understood and agreed on your points. But the sync is not the problem…everything is working fine. It’s the displaying of the sync added files in the iOS Draft folder that’s the problem. They are not there unless I go out and then back in.
How much time passes between the sync to the iPhone and your opening the project? If you increase this time, does the problem go away?
We get used to computer-related actions being instantaneous, but they’re not, really. Quite a bit of processing needs to happen to make your files appear.
So it is on the iPhone you see this? I thought it was on the Mac. On the iPhone, are you having the project open in the app when you download/sync from the server to the iPhone?
Agreed. I thought of this on my way home from work too and tried it. It seems to have fixed the problem.
When I go into the project now on the iPhone after the Dropbox sync, I see a brief message that says something like “Updating Search Index” and then when I continue into the Draft folder it shows the correct/updated contents every time. I don’t remember seeing the “Updating Search Index” brief message previously before I deleted and re-installed.
So, all’s well that ends well. Thanks for the reminder to delete and re-install.
