I just checked with one of my own projects. Existing markers do not change.

After asking the question, I thought that I could have just tried it myself…
I did, and as you say, it doesn’t change them… so I have just changed them all. I do not have that many footnotes so far, so it wasn’t too bad. You are right: much more visible this way, so you really can’t miss them
