Text not appearing on chapter title page during export

Hello,

I’m trying to export my novel as a pdf, using the Paperback(6" x 9") format. I want the text to appear under the chapter number.

In the “Section Layouts” area of the compile window, under the section called “Chapter Heading”, it appears to be correct. I see a Page Break, followed by a number, then followed by the text. When I click “edit Chapter Heading Layout”, the checkbox under “text” is checked.

But when I export, only the number appears on the page and the text starts on the following page (as if there is a section break).

When I do the same thing for the .mobi format, everything works fine.

Thoughts?

The same thing also happens with the docx type.

However, I have a prologue that uses the “title section” layout, and that works fine. The text appears on the same page as the title.

I think it would help to see a screenshot of your compile settings—just the overview is fine, with the Layout previews, and preferably with the correct one selected, so that it highlights in the right contents list which elements are affected by it.

Generally though, another good tip is to edit the Format, and with the intended Layout selected, it will say in the footer bar which types of items in the project make use of it. You would want to see “Chapter Heading” listed on the layout that looks correct (the Layout named “Chapter Title” sounds closest to what you want), in other words.

In looking at these, I would say these are a bit confusing in their naming conventions though. It may deserve clarification that the phrase “Chapter Heading” is in one context being used to describe a structural element of your project (folders that contain scene files, by default), and meanwhile in another context the Paperback format is using that very same phrase to describe how a chapter break should look, as a Layout. That’s probably something we could make a bit clearer in our defaults, honestly.

It is possible I misunderstand your writing completely, but this is as I understand it.

If you are referring to the tick boxes for Title, Synopsis, etc, indicating what to include in Compile for a given binder level, ’Text’ refers to the actual text in the folder/document (i.e what you see in the Editor). If I understand your writing correctly it is the Title that is not showing up, i.e the text in the Binder, because you haven’t ticked the Title box. If your actual sort of “body” text starts on another page it is because it is found in a sub-document and you haven’t adapted the correct section breaks to those sub-documents.
