Hopefully this is an easy one to fix: if I have the text size zoomed to 125%, and press the “split screen” button, the top pane is at 125%, but the bottom (new?) pane is back at 100%.

Yes, it’s very easy to fix - you just need to change the setting for the new pane too.
The zoom can be set independently - it is entirely possible that you have different documents with different fonts in the project, and may not want both zoomed.

Yes! But I’d argue that most users would want the settings for the new pane to be the same as the old pane. I know I can change the setting myself, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I should be made to
I totally disagree, I’m afraid. Each should have a separate setting. But you can always set up your own project template with the zoom of each editor set how you would like for new projects.
