The day of the Big Box

The big box arrived yesterday:

At last, the transformation from pdf proofs to a printed, hold-in-your-hand book.

The second edition process was different from the first, with some unpicking of the text of the first edition before I could weave in the new stuff, all the time wondering ‘why did I write it like that?’ and ‘where did that information come from?’.

Scrivener made it so much easier:

  • Writing in separate documents for each subsection is easier, it really suits this sort of technical text, which is – at bottom – a set of ordered pieces.
  • Document notes so I could remind myself of other links and changes.
  • Colour coding for progress (that lovely moment when a chapter goes all green…)
  • Using keywords to mark up documents with cross references which will change but haven’t yet, and then being able to put them into a collection to sort out the final references.
  • Automatic, off-site back-ups of the whole project to dropbox.

I can now leave that book for a year or so (next regs changes 2016 and 2019) and get on with the next one.

(And if you feel a need to buy it:

Congrats!
