I’ve used this app for several years without a problem. Yesterday I clicked save on my doc and it has disappeared as well as over a hundred other docs in different file locations. The “S” logo does not appear on dozens of my files. Please help!
That’s actually a good sign, in a way.
That likely means your computer (your OS) doesn’t know which app scrivx files belong to.
Right click on one,
Check the option to “Always use this app …”, before picking Scrivener.
(If I am right, you won’t see Scrivener at the top, unlike in my screenshot.)
. . . . . . . .
If Scrivener is not available in the apps list (even under “more apps”),
![]()
then reinstall Scrivener. But your projects should be all fine.
. . . . . . . .
Just don’t go trying a bunch of radical moves, for now.
There is no reason to think you’ve lost any work.
Vincent_Vincent My files don’t show the S logo.
What steps did you take since you’ve first mentioned this ?
I tried loading an image of my screen but the system does not allow recent signees to load an image. I signed up an hour ago. The window that opens shows: Expand, Open in new tab, Open in new window…
I have no idea what this could be, and I don’t see how it could possibly be related.
You should just follow the instructions I provided in my first post.
It is actually a simple non-destructive operation.
Thanks. The files that appear in the XXX.sciv folder are Files, Icons, Settings, Snapshots. No files beginning with the S logo.
Surely there is a file (not a folder) in
that is your project’s title. Do to this file what I showed in my first post.
The reason there is no “S” logo is likely that your computer “forgot” what app to open them files with.
. . . . . . .
You can also try to simply launch Scrivener. If you can’t find it anywhere, well, reinstall Scrivener.
I relaunche twice. No improvement.
Did Scrivener launch at all ?
Yes. I found two of perhaps 500 files that open.
Only the two or three of the many that I’ve created. There is not a list of files I tried to open today and failed to.
In this folder :
Is there or isn’t there a .scrivx file ? (with an x)
99% of the sciv files don’t have an x on the end. A very few still have them. It’s as if those files have been stripped from my PC.
If there is no YourProjectName.scrivx file in your projects’ (.scriv) folders, more so: some yes, some no, then that’s likely OneDrive doing its (shitty) thing to you.
You should be able to recover and restore/download your missing files from your OneDrive folder.
I don’t remember exactly how OneDrive works (I sent it to hell a good while back), but if you right click on your projects’ folders, you should be able to tell OneDrive, in the right-click menu to leave those files offline and untouched.
Thanks. I checked that already.
The vagueness of your replies is making it hard to help you.
Not vague. Very accurate responses to your questions. No need to be judgmental.
No judgement.
It was merely intended as an incentive as to give more details (you) so that whoever tries to help knows what you’ve checked (and then perhaps see that you’ve skipped/missed this or that), what steps you took, and whether your projects’ folders contain or not a .scrivx file (regardless of the “S” logo).
