Till then, familiarize/approximate via remote control....

Have recently been messing about with iPad remote control of PCs via programs such as TeamViewer, LogMeIn Ignition and Splashtop. Strikes me that using Mac or Windows versions of Scrivener remotely from the iPad via such may have some value for Scrivener familiarization, robust remote work and getting a feel for what Scrivener should/should not be like on the iPad.

Teamviewer and LogMeIn Ignition offer robust traditional point-and-click remote control from the iPad of one’s at home/work PC. Works over the Internet and wifi.

Splashtop iPad version is a bit less robust in traditional terms (currently no copy/paste between host PC and iPad, etc.), but is robust in handling video streaming (think Flash) from host PC … AND … does a decent job of making the host PC GUI and apps “touchable”. Think in terms of being able to interact with current Windows (and presumably Mac) versions of Scrivener via iPad single touch rather than two-step point-and-click. Not ideal (requires a PC to remote into and likely have to set it to run the host PC to run at 1024x768 or lower resolution while remotes in), but credible for “touchable” Scrivener. Note that Splashtop’s over-the-Internet connectivity is apparently still being worked on (may be possible for tech geeks, but not us mere mortals)… But is apparently in the works. Works fine locally over wifi.

I’m not sure if a full desktop app with virtual mouse control was really your answer to the “What do you want?” question, but it’s certainly not how the app will work.

It will be a fully native app, different from the desktop but familiar in some of the key Scrivener concepts - no mouse control, virtual or otherwise.

No, not what I’m looking for in the iPad version. Just a way to use Scrivener from an iPad till then and possibly get a sense of what it should/shouldn’t be like and offer on the iPad.

Sorry, I’m too new to Scrivener to be able to suggest subsets or variations that should make into the iPad version. But perhaps an enhanced more writerly onscreen keyboard.

As others have mentioned, keep an eye toward assuring extensibility as new iPad models and OS features come along. More CPU, RAM, storage, resolution, multitask windowing. Stylus handwriting capture and/or OCR.

I’ll shut up and go get experienced with Scrivener (Windows).

Thanks.

To clarify, Splashtop’s away-from-home/office over-the-Internet connection/authentication, which employs Google Mail, proved to be straightforward to set up and use.

Just told Splashtop on both PC and iPad to use internet discovery and supplied Google Mail account and password. (My home PC employs Windows 7, Norton Internet Security and a Netgear router… didn’t have to make any adjustments to them). Any adjustments needed were apparently made by Splashtop and connection, while takes a bit to get started, was transparent.

Works credibly over 3G cellular for routine selection, text entry, etc. Some lag when switching between editing text within an item and the noteboard. Perhaps a little more lag on text entry than with traditional remote control programs that do traditional emulation of point-and-click.

Didn’t try accessing streaming video type material while connected over 3G, on the assumption that would be intolerably slow.
