Titles only on certain chapters

Hey all-

writing a book in which certain chapters will have titles, and some will not. Is there a way to do this in the compile process, or do I need to manually type the chapter titles in those chapters? For example, I want:

“CHAPTER FIVE
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”

“CHAPTER SIX”

“CHAPTER SEVEN
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD”

I can’t figure out a way to do this using the as-is compile in either mac or windows scrivener (i have both)

last question: If I do need to manually type in the chapter headings, what’s the best way to make them look uniform, i.e., have them appear right below the compile-inserted chapter numbers?

thanks

Can you type the names you want in the binder and then compile without adding any prefixes? If the binder reads:

“CHAPTER FIVE
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”

“CHAPTER SIX”

“CHAPTER SEVEN
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD”

The book will read:

“CHAPTER FIVE
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”

“CHAPTER SIX”

“CHAPTER SEVEN
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD”

You can control/apply title formatting as usual during compile.

That’s a good idea, but then won’t I have to build the TOC from scratch?
I had another idea I’ll try out. For the chapters I want with no title, I might name the folder " " (blank space) so it prints it in the compile but a reader won’t notice it.

The TOC will generate based on the chapter settings. Not dependant on the use of prefixes, AFAIK.

Sounds like a good idea. I tried deleting the name, but it defaulted to a blank folder label. The blank space is worth a try.

Good luck.

What does your binder look like? I can think of two simple ways to do this, one that’s currently Mac-only (but which you can setup on Windows, so long as you’re compiling on Mac).

If your binder set up uses folders as containers to hold subdocuments as scenes, and the chapter folders themselves are empty of their own text, you could use the folder text for the titles. So your folder could be called whatever you want in the binder–“Everything Explodes!”–and that title won’t be used in compile. For the chapters that should have a title when compiled, select the folder in the binder, turn off the groupview mode (deselect whichever of the top three options in the View menu has a checkmark), and then type the chapter title right in the editor. If the chapter has no title, just leave it blank. Then in compile, don’t include the folder titles, but do include the folder text. You can format that however you want it. You can also add the chapter numbers as a prefix–that will show up whether or not the titles are used, so your end result will be what you want.

Another option, Mac-specific, is to use custom meta-data for this. You could open Project > Meta-Data Settings… and create a new custom meta-data field for “Title”. On the chapters that should have a title compiling, enter the title in the “Title” field in the inspector. When you compile, don’t include the binder titles, but do add the chapter number prefix, and also add (as part of the prefix) <$custom:Title>. On the documents that have the “Title” custom meta-data field filled in, that text will be added; if there’s nothing there, it’s left blank.
