Toolbar icons: 1 'sort; and 2, custom

Currently, whenever wanting to sort keywords or text files and/or folders, one has to implement a series of time-consuming steps on the menu, namely:

Edit ▸ Move ▸ Sort Ascending|Descending menu commands

In the next version of S3, would it be possible please to have two dedicated icons on the toolbar. One for Sort Ascending, the other for SortDescending. For those of us that sort as a matter of course, that would be a real time-saver.

Another time-saver would an icon that could be user customised to a menu command used regularly. Anything on the menu that involves a series of steps.

You an always assign keyword shortcuts to these menu items using the System Preferences if you use them a lot.

Using System Preferences isn’t as straightforward/easy as a dedicated icon built into Scrivener toolbar.

I am attempting System Preferences but I cannot get the shortcut to work. Here’s what I’ve done:

In System Preferences, click Shortcuts, then App Shortcuts.
Add Scrivener (application)
Edit>Move>Sort Ascending (A-Z)
shortcut key: Alt+Cmd+6

Quit Scrivener. Re-open.
Add new entry randomly in parent folder.
Click parent folder
Alt+Cmd+6

Nothing except a warning sound.

I’ve checked the shortcut for any conflicts but cannot find any.

Where is it going wrong?

When you assign shortcuts, you don’t add the path - just the (exact) name of the menu item itself - in your case Sort Ascending (A-Z). You may have to experiment to see if the dash is a hyphen or an en-dash.

BTW, probably not a good idea to use cmd-alt-number shortcuts as they’re bound by default to the Styles in V3.

(To get to the shortcut panel easily from any program, use cmd-space to bring up spotlight and type key - you’ll get a list, one of which will be the keyboards shortcut preferences panel. If you do that pften enough it will become the first suggested option so all you have to do is press enter. )

Sort Ascending (A-Z) suffices, thank you.

I have checked S3 styles shortcuts but cmd+alt+6 is not amongst them and for the style I’ve created I use shift+cmd+9. I use shortcuts in other apps which would prevent the more obvious choices.

cmd-alt-0-9 are all style shortcuts – you may not have assigned a style to 6 yet, but it’s there. Go to the Styles Panel (Ctl-s) and right click on any of the styles, then Change Keyboard Shortcut and you’ll see what I mean. Those shortcuts are also used in screenwriting mode to select screenplay elements.

Of course you can decide to override them if you’re happy that will never be a problem, but as general advice (many people read these forums) it’s better to find other combinations.
