Trouble importing from Word

Hi
I’d been importing Word files to my project on Scrivener using my Mac, including ‘import and split’ with no problem.

Now I’m set up on my Windows laptop and Scrivener won’t import any Word files at all, not with ‘import and split’ nor even straight import.

The files already imported are still there and work fine.

I downloaded the latest update and installed it, thinking that might fix it but it hasn’t.

Does anyone have any ideas or anyone else had this problem?

Thanks.

I should have included error message. It said it was unable to parse the file contents.

If this is a DOC or DOCX file, you can try switching the import converters. Please go to Tools > Options… and click the Import/Export tab, then the “Import Converters…” button. Select “DOC” from the drop-down menu on the left. If it then shows “Microsoft Office” on the right, change that to “Scrivener” and do the same then for DOCX.

Once you’ve set each of the converters, click OK out of that window and then OK to close Options and try the import again.

If that’s still giving the same error, try saving the original file in Word as an RTF file and importing it, so you bypass the converters on import. If the file path for your document includes special characters such as ł or ę, just go straight to this step. We’re aware of, but haven’t yet been able to resolve, a problem with the import converters handling certain characters. Saving as RTF will allow the import to work correctly.

Finally, if none of the above fix the issue, you can try rebooting the computer and uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of Scrivener, 1.7.3. There was a bug a while ago that gave a “cannot parse” error like that after the initial import & split, and though it was fixed several versions ago, it’s possible that if you updated from a much older version the update didn’t go smoothly and you’ve still got some gremlins in the system.

Thank you.
