Can anyone tell me how to turn off automatic chapter numbering in compile please? Driving me nuts…
Numbering is explained at the link. Turn it off by deleting a placeholder tag such as <$n>, <$w>, etc.
The easy answer is to click the Assign Section Layouts... button below the preview column and select a different heading style that doesn’t have numbering included.
Thank you both so much. I knew about the tags, but couldn’t work out how to access them so thank you Drmajorbob for showing me how to get there. AmberV, that’s going to be very useful too. Much appreciated!
I am writing a novel and I want to compile drafts without Chapter headings and numbers. How do I eliminate this feature? Everything else in my compilation looks fine. Thanks in advance
Chapter 23 in “The Scrivener User Manual” is “Compiling the Draft.” It covers compile settings and how to customize what a user needs/doesn’t need. Can you please take a look at that? We’d be happy to assist you further if you still need assistance after that.
Hi writerJim, and welcome to the forum.
In addition to paulcoholic’s tips from the manual, you might want to check out our 4-part series titled “Getting Your Work Out” on the Mac tutorial videos page.
Those four videos will show using the built-in compile formats as well as accessing the compile designer panel to customize your settings. You might find seeing that process demonstrated is helpful.
The Tutorial also has some documents about the compile process.
I find the Tutorial a good test project for trying out the different compile settings. That way, I’m using a real project for testing, but it’s not one I care about. I feel a bit more willing to play around with settings when the words aren’t my own.
I’ve merged your post into a topic that already exists for this question. While you can deep dive into customisation to solve this problem, it’s good to know that for such a simple change, there often is no need.
All of our stock Formats (outside of the special-purpose stuff like outline printouts) come with Section Layouts that are not numbered, or have no heading at all. Refer to this post above for what I’m talking about.
So yes, the interactive tutorial is definitely something you should take a look at, at some point, as one of the first things it does in introducing compile is walk you through how to add headings to sections that didn’t have them (and your desire of doing the reverse is just another way of saying the same thing).
