Two "Scriveners" on Same Computer?

I have an unusual issue that I haven’t been able to find an answer for.

I had Scrivener installed on my old HP laptop that has since died. I’m now using a Mac desktop that belongs to my friend. His Scrivener is installed on it because we’re writing a book together and all the info for it was already in his account.

I attempted to transfer my old book to his Scrivener account so that all my writing would be in the same place, It didn’t work, of course, because (I now know) I would need to purchase Scrivener for Mac.

So this is my question: Can two Scrivener accounts exist on the same computer?

What do you mean by “Scrivener accounts?”

Scrivener is not a subscription application, and all of its data resides locally.

This means that any copy of Scrivener has access to all projects that are accessible for that MacOS user account.

If you want him to have full access to your work (and vice versa), sharing a single user account will accomplish that.

If you don’t, create a second user account on the machine.

If you want to share some data but not all of it, create two user accounts and read Apple’s documentation on file sharing between them.

Thank you for your response! I’m sorry if I’m being confusing, but I’m confused myself! I’m terrible with computers. I’ll try to rephrase my issue.

I need to get the book I was writing on my old PC onto the Mac without having to rewrite everything. I thought that if I purchased a Scrivener subscription for Mac that my info would automatically transfer to it. So I didn’t understand how to do that seeing as how my friend already has his Scrivener on the Mac.

Your information will not automatically transfer. There is no Scrivener “cloud:” the only access to your data is from your computer. (Unless you’ve configured a sharing service yourself.)

The easiest way to transfer a project is to use the File → Backup → Backup To command and check the box to create a ZIP backup. Then you can email it, put it on a USB stick, or whatever.
