typing lag

I’m running Scrivener 1.9.16.0 on a Windows 10 laptop. I’ve been working in a Scrivener document for the last two weeks: yesterday it began to lag when typing, by more than a second.

The binder item I’m working in is only 2,000 words long at this point. (Oddly, there doesn’t seem to be a lag in other binder items.) Initially, closing and reopening the document helped, but it no longer seems to do so. Changing the font and the auto-save settings don’t make a difference either. I have the program set to save to my local laptop, which is an SSD. It’s a reasonably powerful machine, and I don’t see any conflicts with other programs.

This issue renders the program unusable. Does anyone have a suggested solution?

We’ve sometimes seen this sort of thing caused by overachieving antivirus programs.

If you can, add your Scrivener program folder to your AV programs whitelist. Or put your AV on hold as a test.

Does the binder item in question contain only text?

Best,
Jim

Or, maybe a program is eating the CPU or the memory. I found my mail program using 7 GB the other day (hadn’t rebooted in a couple weeks). I quit and restarted just the mail program, problem solved.

So, apparently, they typing lag was the computer attempting to compensate by doing lots of file swaps with the SSD.

Thanks to both of you for these responses. I added Scrivener to the whitelist in Windows Defender and Malwarebytes, and so far at least the problem hasn’t reappeared. Fingers crossed!
