Updated and now no files will open

I was working on a Scrivener project when the update for 3.1.5.0 popped up, and I immediately downloaded it. Now none of my scrivener files will open up.

I have Windows 11, and I already tried restarting my computer, which did not help.

Thanks for any help!

Does the software open at all, and can it create new projects that open and close successfully more than once? Just trying to narrow down what could be going on. If you can get it open to a project (even just creating a blank test project), then go into File ▸ Options... and in the General: Warnings tab, enable the option to show logging, then restart the software and try to load a project that won’t open.

That will show more detail on what is going on in a separate logging window, and might give some clues as to what is happening.

No, it won’t let me do anything. I tried making something new and it created the file, but won’t let me open it.

Okay, in that case instead of trying to set this option, open a File Explorer window and navigate the Scrivener install folder (this will be C:\Program Files\Scrivener3 by default), and double-click the “ScrivenerLog.bat” launcher, instead of the normal “Scrivener.exe” icon. That will force the logging window open even without the setting.

If I may…
Anti-virus? Whitelist?

It’ll open up that initial window, but won’t actually open a project. I’ve tried opening recent files and existing files from it, and neither of those work.

Norton anti-virus, but I approved Scrivener to make changes.

I should add that it will do the whole ‘loading spell checker’ stuff, as if it were going to open, but then it just does nothing at all.

Okay, that sounds more to me like the software isn’t opening at all, rather than anything project related.

Try this: back in the install folder, find a subfolder named ‘texttospeech’ and rename it. After doing that, try launching normally (without the .bat file).

Still nothing. I tried from open recent, open existing, and directly from a saved document.

And the logging window, can you relay what is being done while trying to open a project?

Regardless of how I try to open a project, it brings up the Scriv icon, says the whole ‘loading icons,’ ‘loading fonts,’ ‘locating spell checker engine,’ and then ‘loading project: location,’ but then it just stops and doesn’t actually open anything.

All right, well I don’t really know what further to suggest without additional information from the logs. If that can’t be done, it would probably be most expedient to simply uninstall and reinstall from a fresh download. That will wipe your settings, but in that case that might be just what needs to be done. Hopefully you have them backed up into a file from some point recent though, and if so you could try importing them if it starts up normally with default settings.

Worst case, if even a fresh start doesn’t work, there is stepping back to the prior version.

Oh, thank heck, going back to 3.1.4.1 worked! Thank you!
