Reading the FAQ it says major updates are sold. It left me with the impression there was an upgrade path that is different from just buying a second license for a newer version. Am I misunderstanding this because in the buy section it only has the option to buy a full license. I have 1.9.7 and am considering vs. 3.x
If I buy vs 3.x and install it will it install alongside 1.9.7 or will it install over it keeping my settings and preferences for projects already started?
v.3 for Windows hasn’t been released yet, it’s due out sometime this year, though you can try the Beta version for free. If you’ve only recently bought Scrivener you may well get v.3 for free anyway. Meanwhile the Beta of v.3 still has a few bugs so try at your own risk. If you do, they recommend you don’t put any important project in there - or at least also have it on your 1.9 version.
When it is released it’ll be the first paid upgrade in years due to major changes in how it works. Most upgrades are free. I’m assuming it’ll be the same as on Mac, you can have the old and new versions installed (just don’t uninstall your 1.9) and can use both (I do on my Mac and they both work open at the same time). Hope that answers your question.

As Owl said, if you bought Scriv recently, you may get the new 3.0 without cost when it’s released. Even if you didn’t buy within the period that gets you a free upgrade, if you have a license to the older version, you will be able to buy the new at a discounted price. I got the new Mac 3.0 for $25, for instance.
