Using document templates

First of all, thank you for a great program! I’ve just started using Scrivener 1.53, but already I can see that it’s going to make me much more productive.

Now to my questions: I’ve created a document template for characters that lists the minimum information I like to have for each of my characters. I want to use it for new characters, but I can’t find a menu item that will allow me to create a new document from a document template. I can find ‘New text’ and ‘New folder’ but I can’t find any way to use the template I created. I’m sure I’m just missing something very simple.

Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

“Document” templates (like in Pages) are not supported (i think KB is adding this for 2.0). What you can do is

  1. Create your template file and leave it in research (if that is where you want to keep your characters)
  2. To create a new character “duplicate” the file.
  3. Rename the duplicate to your character name
  4. Edit the character file.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Yes, exactly this feature is coming to 2.0 (you will assign a folder as the “Templates” folder and thereafter anything that appears in that folder will be available as a basis for new documents via the Documents > New From Template menu). However, there is no such feature in 1.x. Instead, as Jason said, you can use the Duplicate feature. If you have a folder for these character sheets, just place the template at the top of the folder and select it and hit cmd-D every time you need a new one.

All the best,
Keith

Now listen Kevin, I know my name is spelled differently and all …

D’oh, apologies Jaysen, sincerely! I always have to force myself to remember how to spell your name (and if Antony Johnston is listening, his name is even more difficult to remember - I mean, why can’t you just be called Jason and Anthony Johnson, just to help those of us with sieve-like memories?). Sorry! I blame your parents. (Though I’m sure they’re to blame for a lot… )

As much as I would like to accuse the genetic source for all my issues I think most of them are self inflicted. The name though … that is all them.

Thanks very much Jaysen and Keith for you replies. I’m looking forward to 2.0!

Cheers,
Darryl
