Using Scrivener with Dropbox

Hi All,
I was experimenting with my Scrivener Project in Dropbox today (opening the project package, amending a document, closing, syncing, re-opening in Scrivener) when I noticed a sync issue. I’m not sure if this a Dropbox thing - but I noticed the “top level” sync button was showing everything was synced, whereas actually at lower levels, my document changes had not synced yet.

Here is what a top level screenshot looked like:

and here is the lower levels

- clearly not synced.

I’m not sure how to avoid this problem other than checking lower levels but it does seem problematic.

The best binary indicator is the Dropbox icon in your menu bar. It will give you a clear syncing/done indicator. If you click, it will also give you progress information.

I have found those icons to be semi-unreliable (in 10.10+ at least). Sometimes closing and opening the folder window does the trick in updating the status.

The iTunes description says: Use Dropbox to sync between devices and with the macOS and Windows versions of Scrivener.

I’ve tried several things, but can’t get this work.

Can someone please direct me to step-by-step instructions so that I may do the following:

(1) Sync a Scrivener project from my mac to Dropbox; (2) then open it on my iPad where I can make changes to the project (I’ve managed this far, but not beyond this point); (3) then I sync that project from my iPad back to Dropbox; (4) I open the newly edited project on my Mac, and see the changes I made on the iPad.

Thank you,
Dan

There is a full guide on syncing in our knowledge base, but it should be noted that the basics, a simple list on getting started, is provided in the built-in tutorial as well.

Thanks AmberV. Seems I’d done everything correctly in terms of setting things up, but it still wasn’t working. So I updated to the latest version of Scrivener for Mac, and I initiated all the updates lingering in my App’s “Update” queue. Now it syncs fine.

Ah, yes older versions of Scrivener were not programmed with a knowledge of how to open projects edited with the mobile version.

Hi,

FIRST I’m sorry if I’m the annoying forum user who asks a question that has already been asked…but I couldn’t seem to find a clear answer in this thread…

What is the step-by-step process to sync an entire Scrivener project on my Macbook with the new Scrivener app on my iPhone?

I’m confused about whether to EXPORT the entire project from my computer to my Dropbox folder OR to choose the “sync” option instead and sync the Scrivener project with that Dropbox folder OR “save” the Scrivener project to the Dropbox folder, etc. - there are obviously a variety of options and I want to choose the right one so that I can work on my project from both the mobile app (which I just purchased) and my computer.

Thanks.
Ben

Ben: Have a look at this: scrivener.tenderapp.com/help/kb … g-with-ios

It has a detailed, step-by-step explanation of how to sync projects between iOS and Mac or Windows computer. I think it’s much better than anything someone might write here.

Hi Ben, the link rdale shared was useful for me. From there, I ended up only needing this video tutorial (which, btw, will explain that you don’t use the Sync option on your computer): vimeo.com/176164105

I’m really struggling with syncing. I have an iPad and MacBook Air. I can create projects on the iPad, and sync them to the Dropbox/Apps/Scrivener folder in my online Dropbox account. However, even though I have Dropbox on my laptop, and I’m logged in, there is no “Apps” folder in my laptop’s dropbox folder (as it appears under Favorites in the finder window). Therefore, documents I create on my iPad never sync to my laptop. I have tried all of the steps in the tutorial, and also tried uninstalling/reinstalling dropbox on my laptop and reinstalling Scrivener on my iPad. Nothing works.

I like Scrivener on my laptop, but feel as though this new app product that everyone is raving about is not particularly useful for me.

Are you using the same dropbox account username and logon? It sounds to me like you may have more than one, and are using different accounts for the sync software on your mac vs. the one you linked to in iOS Scrivener.

Have you set up your laptop to use selective syncing in the past? If so you need to manually opt-in to each new folder you create, before it will be synced to the local device. To check for this, click the Dropbox icon in the menu bar, select Preferences from the gear menu, and then click Change Settings… on the Selective Sync item in the “Account” tab.

I’ve been using Scrivener both on my MacBook Pro (OS 10.11.3) and on a G4 PowerBook - OS 10.5.8. But recently Dropbox made it impossible to use its app on the PowerBook. How can I keep my docs sync’ed? I’m willing to carry a flash drive back and forth, but I want to be sure I’m moving the correct files on it. Judging by dates, it seems I should move [title]…scriv but will that open in both the current version and the older one that works with OS 10.5.8?
Apologies if this is a hopelessly clueless question…

You would need to stick with Scrivener 2.6 on your 10.11 computer, because that is the last version that works in the project format that 2.5 can work with—and 2.5 is the last version of Scrivener that can run on PowerPC. I should also add that 2.6 was never tested to operate correctly on 10.11, or 10.10 for that matter. You may well run into crashing and other bugs with it, but I can’t really say for sure. Have a look at the bug fix list on the site and you’ll see all of the “fixed for OS X #” stuff that might impact you.

That aside there are hundreds of syncing tools out there, you might find an alternative to Dropbox that works that is more convenient than thumb drives.

See if Cubby will work across your devices. I (and several others) have been using it for years with great success. Rock steady and reliable, some advantages over Dropbox, including 5GB for free and the ability to make any folder a Cubby.

Sadly, no odrive integration. Gonna reach out to both and see if they can work something out.

Hello all, first time poster and utter newbie to Scrivener, so please bear with me.

I’m trying to work out how to sync to Dropbox (literally from the start).
Following these instructions:
“In Scrivener for iOS, make sure you are viewing the projects screen (the screen that lists all of the projects and the tutorial), and do not have a project open.
Tap the “sync” icon (the two curved arrows forming a circle).”

My problem is that I don’t have the sync icon on the screen. I’m looking at the Project Templates screen, with the Interactive Tutorial, User Manual and Video Tutorials. Is this the screen I am supposed to find the sync icon on?
I can’t see a sync option when I have a project open, either.

Cheers,
Mrs DV

The instructions you are quoting are referring to the iOS version, but the description of the Project Templates screen imply that you’re looking at the Windows or Mac version.

Edit: to expand on that a little, you have to install the dropbox software on your Windows or Mac computer (see dropbox.com/en/help/4454) in order to save projects to dropbox on those types of devices. If you have an iOS device, I’d advise you to set everything up on your iOS device (iphone/ipad) and create a test project from that interface first. If you don’t, just install the dropbox software on your other non-iOS computers.
