Vellum Export Section Layouts

HI. I want my chapters to start:
CHAPTER ONE
time/location subtitle.
The way I do it now is manually entering the subtitle in Vellum. I would love to be able to have Vellum format my subtitles on import but no layout in the Scrivener 3 compile window offers the option of Chapter/subtitle without a Section title.
A) Any suggestions?
B) Is there a way to create new layout types?

Does the new Velum Export in Scrivener 3.0.3 do what you need?

Yes, it is possible to create a new layout – see attached.

I’m making the following assumptions:

  1. You are using the new “Vellum Export” Compile Format of 3.0.3.

  2. You have followed the instructions in the sample project available here and are creating the subtitle using custom metadata.

As long as both of those are true, it’s very easy to do what you need:

  1. Ctrl-click on “Vellum Export”.

  2. Select “Duplicate & Edit Format…”.

  3. Under “Section Layouts”, select “Chapter Title with Subtitle”.

  4. Click the “+” button in the top right. This will create a duplicate of the “Chapter Title with Subtitle” layout.

  5. Name the new layout “Chapter Heading with Subtitle” (for example).

  6. Un-tick “Title” next to your new “Chapter Heading with Subtitle” layout. This will cause “Section Title” to disappear from the preview below.

  7. Select the “Title Options” tab in the middle.

  8. Remove the return character from before <$custom:Subtitle> in the Title Suffix area.

  9. Return to the “Formatting” tab - you should see that it now looks as you want.

  10. Click “Save”.

  11. Click “Assign Section Layouts”.

  12. Assign the new “Chapter Heading with Subtitle” layout to your chapter folders.

  13. Click “OK”.

  14. Click “Compile”, or hold down Option (which makes “Compile” change to “Save”) and click “Save” to save your settings.

I’ll be sure to add this extra Section Layout to the official “Vellum Export” format for the next update, but to do so I will just be following the instructions above myself and then including the updated format with Scrivener.

Hope that helps.

All the best,
Keith
