WELCOME TO SCRIVENER 1.0 WINDOWS BETA

Happy WinScrivDay!

Fear not the Scrivener elves have been working day and night to ensure that Windows Scrivener Beta gets delivered today. It shouldn’t be long now.

Here’s something to read whilst you count down the minutes of the release - judging from the forums most of you might be too excited to read it properly later anyway.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS SOFTWARE IS THE FIRST BETA VERSION. THIS
MEANS THE SOFTWARE IS NOT PERFECT YET. WE HOPE THAT INTREPID
USERS, LIKE YOURSELF, ARE WILLING TO ASSIST US MAKE SCRIVENER FOR
WINDOWS A FANTASTIC PRODUCT BY REPORTING BUG IMPERFECTIONS ON THE
SCRIVENER FOR WINDOWS BUG FORUM BELOW
viewforum.php?f=29

Alternatively, within Scrivener for Windows you can Report a bug
via the menu - Help > Report Bug.

Please note, if you do take the time to report a bug:
*** ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS PROVIDE STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON
WHAT YOU DID (AND THUS WHAT WE NEED TO DO) TO ENCOUNTER A BUG: IF
WE CAN’T REPRODUCE IT, WE CAN’T FIX IT ***
To make bug reports as useful as possible, we would be very
grateful if you could adhere to the following guidelines when
reporting bugs:

When reporting a bug, please try to be as thorough as possible.
Describe exactly how we can experience the bug ourselves. If we
can’t find it, we can’t fix it. Make sure you:

  • Say what you expect to happen.
  • Say what actually happens.
  • Describe EXACTLY how to reproduce the bug in clear language,
    preferably by providing numbered steps.
It saves us a lot of time to be able to reproduce the bug straight
away rather than having to ask users to reword their bug reports.

IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you read through the tutorial
accessible from the Scrivener Help menu. Working through this
short 30-40 minute tutorial will assist you greatly in quickly
understand the current features in Scrivener for Windows and
what’s not implement yet. If you can’t spare 30-40 minutes, there
is an introductory video on how to use Scrivener which runs for
less than 10 minutes here:
literatureandlatte.com/video … ls_Win.mov

This beta’s current working functionality is best outlined in the
tutorial on the Scrivener ‘Help’ menu. Highlighted in the tutorial
in ORANGE are features that we are still working to implemenent
and that are not yet part of this beta version. It is anticipated
that a new beta version will be released every 4-6 weeks with bug
fixes and additional functionality leading up to the final version
being released sometime in Feb 2011.

It is likely that this first beta may crash from time-to-time;
however, we have worked very hard to ensure that your data is
continuously backed up and retrievable with a simple restart of
the program. However, if you’re paranoid then please
READ THE TUTORIAL on getting data in and out of scrivener via
import and export.

We would like to thank you for helping us turn Scrivener for
Windows into a great writers tool.

Happy Writing!

 Allrighty sounds great! We will be prepared for sheer delight, writing, and bug hunting!

Bring on the link!!

Can I just say… YAY!

This kind of reminds of waiting in line for hours to watch a science fiction movie like Star Wars. I only did that twice in life. The first time it was for Woody Allen’s Manhattan, and the second time it was the enirte morning and afternoon for Shakespeare in the Park.

Please forgive the use of a large image but this replicates my emotion about the Scrivener release quite well. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s funny - I’ve been a professional commercial writer for 25 years, but have never strayed much beyond Word for most of that time (we’re talking DOS versions here) or even been much aware of software designed for writers’ needs rather than the mish mash of irrelevant or missing functionality in word processing packages (though I have lately moved Libre/OpenOffice in frustration at the way things are going in Word).
Still frustration is no more. I chanced on Scrivener via a comment yesterday on a PC Pro blog … and as if by magic the Windows beta came on line a few hours later (sorry - but I don’t and won’t use a Mac - lovely hardware but I can’t live with the Jobsian world view). I’ve not gone far with it yet but it seems both the answer to an unworded prayer and superior to the other writing packages I’ve suddenly become aware of. It won’t replace my word processors (I’ll need those for working with clients) but it gives me a much more potent tool for creating first drafts, as is its declared intention. I write creatively and it will be good for that, but for commercial work where you have to marshal a great deal of research material, outlines, source texts and notes, I can see it being absolutely invaluable. And I’ll be spreading the word through the various professional groups I belong to … time to break the tyranny of the office suite with better focused applications…

Ahh damn, It crashed on the tutorial. (And I uninstalled 1.6) :frowning: Will submit details to tech support.

Hi JMS! Nice to see you’re using Scrivener but sorry to see it’s been giving a bit of grief.
Your sister.
