What’s the standard way to markup manuscripts?

Can anyone point me to a concise, definitive guide to the standard way to markup manuscripts? i.e. the way editors etc mark items for correction, add notes and so on.

I’d like to get into the habit of using the standard way of doing this but have no idea what the standard is. I’m pretty sure I’m not even using the correct term for it. Knowing that would be a good start :confused:

In my experience, the liberal use of red crosses and the phrases “citation needed”, “EXPRESSION!” and “Why?” seem to be enough. Maybe that’s just in academic settings though…
