I am unable to get a word count, either for the project as a whole, or individual documents. When I ask for statistics I get a page of 0s. This matters. Can anybody help?

Either uncheck this option from the statistic panel :
Or set the compile panel to represent what you consider to be your manuscript. (This includes turning off the filter – if on – next to where you select the root of what to compile.
Save the compile panel new state by holding down the alt key. This will toggle the “Compile” button at the bottom right to “Save”.

Note that you may also alternatively get a global wordcount by hovering the middle of the toolbar:

Thank you. That all works. Can you also tell me how to turn on the spell check? I’ve just noticed it isn’t functioning either
I will rather encourage you to use the search function of the forum.
This is a very common and easy to find topic/answer.
Having learnt to use the search function will be a plus for you next time around.
