Wherefore Art Thou, AppleScript?

Hey all, Keith.

I’ve mentioned it a few times in other posts – usually among laundry-lists of other (and sometimes lofty) feature requests or various ideas for Scrivener improvements – but I’d like to take the opportunity to ask about something that before was only an abstract and rather nice-sounding idea, but that has evolved into a slightly more pressing (and interesting) question (for me, at least). Since getting a decent handle on Scrivener’s existing (and impressive) toolset — which has taken me awhile, and I’m still discovering new things — I’ve also started learning about AppleScript, and all the marvelous and nifty things it can do. So I figured I would just ask the logical question – how far into the future are we looking when it comes to AppleScript and Scrivener being happily married? It seems like it would be a HUGE undertaking, but boy, would it ever be worth it for us end-users! Just a question. I figured if I’m writing Wish List posts about plug-in architectures and all other sorts of end-user flights of whimsy and fancy, I might as well ask about something more basic and realistic first, and AppleScript support seems like it would, logically, be a great thing to have someday.

This post may go some way to answering your question:

BTW, “wherefore” = “why” – I think you probably meant “where are you …”

Hi,

To be honest, I’ve no idea. It’s one of those things that are on the perpetual “soon” list, but because it’s such a massive undertaking it keeps getting pushed back. At the moment, there’s also the concern that app sandboxing, which Apple are enforcing for all Mac App Store apps, could break AppleScript, although I doubt that will happen.

All the best,
Keith

But haven’t you sometimes wondered why it was called something which sounded like a Southern dessert?

ps

Well, I’m from England, so there’s not a lot of (any?) difference between southern and northern desserts in my experience  . Of course, you get clotted cream down in the area where Keith lives these days, but I wouldn’t draw too many conclusions from that .
