Why can't I create a template that is how I want it?

I think I have followed directions. I create a project, set everything, choose a font for the default main text attributes (verdana 12), paragraph settings, etc. Then I save this as a template and choose it as the default template. Then whenever I start a new project, up comes a page that has a totally different font in it, ALL CAPS!. I have no idea where that comes from and I have tried, like several times, to fix it without success.
I AM on Snow Leopard. Is this the problem?

I’m guessing you have accidentally switched to scriptwriting mode. Text > Scriptwriting, then switch off Scriptwriting mode.
