Why do you use or want a Mac?

Actually DG, he makes your point a bit clearer… If you want the same perf from windows over the lifetime of the systems you need to put the same $$ in up front, or you have to be an expert to “build your own”.

TCO is a lot more than purchase price. Too bad most folks don’t really get that.

Fair enough, thank you for the parallax. My day yesterday was weird so my interpretation may have been even more off than normal.

Thanks for the heads up! I went to the Apple Store today to check them out, and can confirm that the newer keyboard on the larger Pros are ever so slightly improved. In my case, not enough that I’d actually want to use them, but perhaps so for others.

The switch will probably improve the reliability problem, but they still have a ridiculously short and light key travel — I really don’t know why they want to have such low profile keys. Are we really that worried about our laptops being an extra mm thick? It’s not far removed from typing on a touch screen (Okay, I’m exaggerating… but it’s closer to that than it is to my trusty old 2013 model keyboard)! I’m also hugely against the concept of a touchbar! I want physical buttons on my laptop. By all means but a little screen above them to change the labels, but I don’t want a touch-sensitive anything on my laptop.

That said, if the “interim” ultra low keys were something you weren’t a fan of, but it wasn’t so annoying to you that it would prevent you from buying the machine, then the latest keys would be an improvement.

Thanks again, Silverdragon, for letting me know. Was good to test, and hopefully an encouraging sign for future iterations!

First guess off the top of my head is to reduce the amount of gunk that can get under the keys and cause issues. The second is to reduce the potential for keys damaging the screen.

Lower mass keys would also exert a lower gravitational force on other celestial bodies in the galaxy, so I guess there are lots of reasons now I think about it.
