Windows 7 Problem (Doesn't Load)

Weird one this - I installed the latest beta, double clicked the icon, clicked ‘OK’ to get past the December warning, get as far as starting a new project, type in a name, then hit Create…

Then nothing.

I can see that it’s created some folders, and if I’ve got Task Manager running I can see Scrivener running - and then promptly disappear.

Is it something stupid I’ve done or is this a known problem?

Be very grateful for any help as I’m an author and was really looking forward to trying this program!

Many thanks.

I have exactly the same problem. Scrivener shows as running on my netbook with 49% of the CPU, but that’s all. No visible windows, no taskbar entries. I have to kill it with Task Manager.
The first beta did not have this problem.
I have tried uninstalling via Revo Uninstaller to insure that all files and registry entries are scrubbed clean. It doesn’t make a difference.

I have this same weird problem. Scrivener worked fine for a day or two, then it simple stopped working. It gives me the beta version message, shows up momentarily in my Task Manager Processes, then disappears and nothing happens. Restart, uninstall. reinstall, same behavior. uninstall again, regedit, remove all mentions of scrivener, reinstall, then aha! it starts fine!

But when I try to open my old projects, it hangs! So my conclusion is that it is an issue with a corrupt project file (it crashed once while that project was open; that might have caused it). So when I run Scrivener it tries to open that last project by default, but it can’t cause it is corrupt, so it doesn’t run at all!

In your case, try to move your last project to another folder. Start Scrivener, it will not find the corrupt project, and it will prompt you to create a new project or open an existing one. Then it should run fine. Please let me know how that goes.

I tried to open the the corrupt .scrivx file with an XML editor to compare it with a good .scrivx file, but couldn’t spot any obvious differences. I played around, deleted some entries (on a back file of course), etc., but to no avail. So I guess I will have to manually recreate that project file! What a waste. Unless the kind support people here give us a better solution!

I am running Windows 7 on a new PC (8G RAM, 2TB hard disk, etc.)

Mohamad

This page: http://literatureandlatte.com/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ:_Troubleshooting#Resetting_Scrivener.27s_Preferences suggests that a possible fix to a corrupt project file is to import it using File/Import/Scrivener Project. However, this option is not available in the Windows version. It might be on Mac only.

Are those of you having problems with it using any kind of security program? I know there have been known issues with Norton.

I am using AVG, not Norton. But again, it is clearly the project file. A new project file runs fine, the old one blows up and is clearly corrupt.

I’m still keen to get this working (I thought I had signed up to receive messages when someone replied, but hadn’t, so wasn’t aware of any of the comments above, sadly), but currently cannot. I’ve installed it on my laptop (also running Windows 7) without a hitch, but am reticent to use this software further until I can get to the bottom of why it’s not working on my main machine.

Just to recap (and I’ve installed the latest version, then uninstalled and deleted everything, and installed the latest version again - still no joy) - it seems to install without a hitch, but when I click on the icon, it will work only briefly (sometimes it will let me select a project type, other times it won’t get that far - presumably a corrupt file, as someone mentioned above). If I have Task Manager up at the same time I can watch the program appear in memory, for about ten seconds, and then disappear before my eyes.

I was thinking it might be the (very basic) security I run on my main PC (only Windows Firewall and Windows Security Essesntials - the laptop is running Comodo AV/firewall), but if I switch them off, Scrivener still fails to initialise.

Any ideas, anyone?

Apologies for resurrecting my own thread, but I still can’t get Scrivener to install on my main PC. Or, rather, it seems to install OK (just installed the latest version from within Safe Mode) but as soon as you click on the icon, it loads up, then disappears without a trace, as per my messages above.

Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.

Cracked it. Or, rather, someone else has! I’ve assiduously downloaded and installed every version since November, and - on my main PC - have continued to have the problem outlined above. However, the latest version (1.9) installed and worked like a charm. I can’t see any reference to this sort of bug in the notes (5th MAR - LEE'S UPDATE & BETA 1.9 RELEASED), but no matter. Scrivener now works, on all my machines, and I’m looking forward to writing a book or two on it!

Thank you, lovely Scrivener people.

I am having the same problem. I posted in the bug hunt yesterday but didn’t get solution.
Today I have the icon back, it’s in the widows 7 ribbon. If I hover over the icon I can see my corkboard but I can’t get it to open.

I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled a lot.

I tried moving the folder to another location as was suggested above and now I get this message:

Project ABC is incompatible with this version of Scrivener.
