I am not technical and I don’t know the correct terminology, so please bear with me.
I have moved from ios to Windows. I still have my iphone and I still sync to Dropbox. I am competent at syncing and understand that bit. I don’t have an Apple laptop/Mac. I was previously syncing between an iPad mini and my iPhone.
I have bought the new licence for Windows and have set Scrivener up, to the best of my ability. A friend helped me and I also sought advice from L&L. I thought I had got Scrivener on Windows laptop working.
I haven’t really used it yet, and am still getting used to it. However, I have come back to it recently and there is a problem. I don’t know the correct way to describe it, the best I can say is that the file that contains my actual writing has disappeared from some of the projects, but remains in other projects. I attach two screenshots to try and explain what I mean.
Your second screenshot with the missing content seems to be from an earlier period, based on the dates of the folders in Scrivener Projects. (!?!)
What’s happening in your Scrivener Backups folder? Is your iOS work syncing there?
Hi. Thanks for your reply. I have asked people to help me make back-ups, though I am still totally at a loss as to how to do it. When I was using my iphone, I would email everything to myself. Not ideal, but I could make that work and I understood the process, even if it is cumbersome.
I will attach two screenshots here of what I see regarding back ups on my Windows laptop. I can see zipped files, which I understand are lots of information all squashed up. However, I can also see that the dates are very old. Are these the back up files that you were referring to - or should I look somewhere else?
With your comment about the dates of the folders in Scrivener Projects, I don’t know the answer to that. Would it be that I used one project at a different time to the other?
Hi rms. Thanks for the reply. I have changed the setting to 'Available offline". Here is a screenshot of the result, however the problem remains. UPDATE - I resynced on my iphone. No change. Error remains.
Hard to say offhand. You don’t have recent (late 2024) backups in your Backups folder. Also, backups generally carry the same name as the project with a few extras added in.
On Windows, go to File > Options > Backups and choose your options there.
For safety-sake, set more than one backup. You’d not want to lose those projects that are 59 MB and 11 MB in the event of a corrupted backup.
I have been into my web browser and looked at Dropbox on there. I will attach screenshots. In the run up to changing from an iPhone to an Android phone, I deleted a lot of stuff (stuff that I should have tidied up years ago). I don’t know how to read the information. Does it look as if I have deleted the relevant info. Should I press ‘restore’ - or will that just make everything crazy and even more mixed up?
A question on a tangent. How do I navigate this thread? I put a question on, and two different people kindly answered me. Do I reply to each individual? I am trying to do that and it is getting confusing. Or do I just type in my replies here?
.“…backups generally carry the same name as the project with a few extras added in.

Where do I find File>Options>Backups, please? I have looked in File Explorer, which is the only item with the word ‘file’ in it, but I don’t think that is right.
I would like to get a grip of back ups. but I would think that I need to ensure that Scrivener is working first, as otherwise I am not backing up properly?
Not necessarily. I usually comment, if I have a mind to and add a paragraph of advice, if I think it’s related to the topic at hand.
If confused, I wouldn’t chew your head off if you asked what I mean or for further clarity. I believe the latter is what I was attempting to do with my first response.
Some people never answer, which could mean they have the answer, or the answer is more trouble than worth pursuing. Other’s sometimes climb on board after an indeterminate time and say, that seem worth a go.
First, you might want to include a quote of what you are replying to (as I have) to make your response more understandable in a long thread. This is as simple as highlighting that text and choosing “quote”. This will automatically open the ‘reply to’ text window.
If you you just want to direct your reply to one person’s’ comment, click on the big arrow to reply.
The benefit of both these methods, is that you can easily follow the flow of conversation. For instance, at the top of this post (I’m on mobile fwiw) you’ll see your avatar and an arrow which notes I’m replying to your comment. You can click on that to jump back to your original comment. Once there, you’ll see a down arrow with a number (bottom left on my screen) denoting the number of replies to it. If you click on that, it will expand to show you both the comment from kevitech57 and myself (and any others that jump in) all in a row without other stuff in the middle.
There is a tutorial for posting in this forum if you’re interested in learning more about all the other icons you can choose. I hope this helps!
