I know how to make a Table of Contents for a file. Is there a metadata code so I can include the word count on the ToC page?
Have you tried <$wc>
?
(“Gets replaced during the Compile process with the total word count of the text currently being compiled.”)
The full list of placeholders is in the Help menu.
November, thank you.
Major Bob, I did search the Scrivener Manual under the Help Menu. Guess I was thinking “metadata” instead of “placeholder”.
Thanks to all!
Okay, $wc gives me word count for the whole document being compile, not the individual chapters. So close.
So you want the word count for each chapter besides the corresponding TOC items (chapters)? I’m not sure if this is possible with the available placeholders and Scrivener’s compiler / TOC generator.
May I ask what you try to accomplish?
I have a word count goal set for each chapter. Yes, I know the window will show me a progress bar.
I want to compile the project into a PDF and have a page show me what my word count for each chapter. Yes, I know I can see it on the screen. But I like seeing it in a PDF also. I can see a PDF quicker than going to each individual chapter. It doesn’t have to be in the ToC. I just know how to create a ToC and it updates itself each time I compile the project. (And Yes, I compile the project into a PDF each day, sometimes several times a day, even though the program creates a backup each time. I like going to the PDF to see what was there versus using snapshots. I’m weird that way.)
Something like this:
The Gladiator … 3551 … 1
The Rogue … 2546 … 19
The Melee … 3507 … 22
The Alleys … 3593 … 50
In the Help menu is a list of all placeholders. It doesn’t include anything like this. It does include $linecount, which counts the number of lines in a document – not the number of lines in a container including subdocuments – but I suppose that doesn’t help you any.
I did take a look too, and came to the very same conclusion. Line count is the closest you’ll get.
If I were you, I’d set my draft folder to outliner view, and take a screenshot.
Good idea. Either that or print / export the Outline. Might get a bit long for a regular screenshot. (See: 26.3 “Printing Outlines” in the Scrivener macOS manual.)
That was my first thought, but I had a doubt about the possibility to have it include the wordcount. (?)
I believe you have to turn that “column” on in the print setup, first (if you print). Should be included in CSV export by default. Other than that… there should be at least two Outline compile formats. But I never used them, so I don’t know if they’re a good alternative.
Yep, pretty much figured out I can’t do what I was hoping for. Dern.
Thanks, everyone, for looking in to my request.
If it doesn’t have to be in the ToC, look into the alternatives mentioned above. A “goog enough” solution could be literally a click away.
