Word Count Displayed as Symbols

I’m using version 3.1.5 on an iMac. Whenever I try to perform a word count, it is expressed as a series of symbols like this:
<$wc>. I’m wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if there is a way to fix it.

Many thanks for help and advice!

Can you elucidate “perform a word count” in Scrivener?

In general, I use either the word count in the big search box or in the project targets dialogue. Sometimes I use the value in the footer after selecting docs/folders in the Binder.

In none of those cases do I see the symbols you mention, so I presume you are doing something else.

I used the projects target to do a draft word count, and it worked fine. Thank you for your help!

<$wc> is the placeholder you would use to insert the word count into your output document. It’s not the way to get a “live” count while you’re writing. For that, follow Auxbuss’ suggestions.
