Word Count not matching MS Word

When I compile my project to an MS Word document, without titles, just text, the word count I see in Scrivener never seems to match the word count in Word. It’s always off a by a few words. Why is this?

Off by a few words is to be expected. There is no precise science to how words should be counted, so different programs will produce slightly different results. Hyphenation is a common source for discrepancies, and some even work differently with adjoined em dashes and so forth.

How does Scrivener do it? Does Scrivener count hyphenated words as one word, etc.?

In Scrivener, “line-wrapping” will count as two words.

That phrase is 9 words in Scrivener, and 8 in Word.
