No new version to test at present, but I do think I’ve tracked the problem in your specific project to having a duplicate hyperlink in a footnote and the main text. In your sample project, the first footnote in the document beginning “4.” includes a hyperlink which is also included in the “References” document main text. That’s why excluding footnotes (or excluding either of those documents) allowed the compiled document to open correctly. If you remove that duplicated hyperlink from either of those documents, you should be able to produce a DOCX that will open properly, so give that a try.
That at least is a bug, which I’ve been able to reproduce in a new project, but it doesn’t address the other case in this thread, since those project had no footnotes. Unfortunately I’m not sure there’s much more to do with that without a sample project. @johnludlam, if you’re able to at some point create a copy of one of the problem projects and run a project replace to obfuscate the text (replace all the characters with “e” or the like), you can see if that still reproduces the issue and send it along to support or attach it here if so.
