I just installed the trial version and I am trying to use the interactive tutorial. The application asks me to select a folder since I could modify the tutorial while working on it. Whatever folder I select I get the following message:
Impossibile accedere a: [path]
Non sei autorizzato a salvare in questa posizione.
Contatta l'amministratore per ottenere l'autorizzazione.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Unable to access: [path]
You are not allowed to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain authorization.
Please note that:
- it occurs whatever folder I select
- I am logged to Windows as administrator
- I also tried launching Scrivener as administrator: no change
Not a good start with trial. Any help appreciated.
Any non-standard characters in the file name that might be causing a naming conflict for Windows?
If you open another test file, does that have the same problem?
Could any other program be locking the file, such as a virus scan?
There is a Scrivener project file on the link below. If you download that just as a test file, does the system allow you to open, edit, and then save that file?

I made additional tests and I can provide you with additional info to troubleshoot this problem.
- I verified that folder is not locked by another application
- I verified that I have the authorization to write in the folder
- I was able to create files in that folder by other applications (Word, Notepad, …)
I made three tests with different results
I - CREATE FOLDER ON THE FLY
x. I launch Scrivener
a. I click on tutorial
b. I am prompted to save a copy of tutorial in another folder
c. I click on Continue
d. a Windows Explorer panel opens to save the file (no default name, no default type)
e. I select “My Documents” (I tried also with other existing folders)
f. I create a folder and I name it “My Scrivener” (I tried also other names with no space inside)
g. I fill in a file name (I tried with and without .scriv(x) extension)
h. I get the error message
i. Scrivener does not save the file AND REMOVE THE FOLDER I CREATED
II - USE A PREVIOUSLY CREATED FOLDER
x. I launch Scrivener
a. I go to “My Documents” by Windows Explorer (I tried also with other existing folders)
b. I create a folder and I name it “My Scrivener” (I tried also other names with no space inside)
c. I click on tutorial
d. I am prompted to save a copy of tutorial in another folder
e. I click on Continue
f. a Windows Explorer panel opens to save the file (no default name, no default type)
g. I select the RECENTLY created folder
h. I fill in a file name (I tried with and without .scriv(x) extension)
i. I get the error message
j. Scrivener does not save the file AND REMOVE THE FOLDER I CREATED
III - USE AN OLD EMPTY FOLDER
x. I launch Scrivener
a. I click on tutorial
b. I am prompted to save a copy of tutorial in another folder
c. I click on Continue
d. a Windows Explorer panel opens to save the file (no default name, no default type)
e. I select “My Documents” (I tried also with other existing folders)
f. I select “My Publications” (existing empty folder)
g. I fill in a file name (I tried with and without .scriv(x) extension)
h. I DO NOT get the error message
So
A. the bug is severe because it REMOVE the folder, even if it was created before clicking on tutorial (but always BEFORE launching Scrivener)
B. it does NOT occur with an old folder
I suspect the problem is related to misuse of Windows API. I wonder if you get some directory list as the program is launched. In any case, I suspect it is related to the way you use the SAVE AS windows.
Is Windows the reference platform for development, or rather Linux/Mac?
The forum isn’t full of Windows users having the same problem, so I guess it must be something particular to your installation.
I hope one of the devs will be able to help you identify and rectify the issue.
Well. I had been a developer for many years and in my experience, when you have this kind of problems, it is because there is a bug in program. The fact that there are other few cases similar to mine is not necessarily relevant, since probably most of users have the same Windows version, that is, the English one.
In two hours I also experienced a lot of other problems. For example, if you import a Word file containing a table where you have different number of columns in different rows, the table is not correctly loaded. Scrivener seems to have problems with small caps too. The Italian dictionary is incredibly poor. So, I like a lot the concept but I am very worried about the implementation. A writer needs a STABLE program to work, to focus on writing, not on software.
Scrivener is a writing tool. Tables work, but not with the same functionality of other programs. Write in Scrivener. Format tables elsewhere.
Do you have all the available Italian dictionaries?

Users can always compile and proof in other software. Again, Scrivener’s strength is as a writing tool, not as a proofing app, layout app, photo-editing app, etc.
The devs are very good at what they do, and very helpful to users. You will find help and advice from a very willing community. Lot of happy users around the world, including Italy, using a stable app on their systems.
Last sentence is very true. I always advise fellow writers to get a Mac…with a stable OS that leaves them free to write sans headaches. No need to ever use Windows or Office.
Ciao, good luck, and happy writing.
Forgot to say, if you think you have identified a bug, the devs will be very happy to hear from you (esp given your tech expertise).

Hope things work out for you.
Ciao.
OK, I’ll do. In the meanwhile, I will continue with Word and Excel. Not the ideal solution — I really like the approach used by Scrivener, that is, all the stuff in a single place — but there are two aspects that let me decide not to use it, for the time being:
- stability, that is, I had few hangs where the program closed abruptly… it let me feel insecure, I do not want to miss some piece of work for software instability.
- flexibility, that is, I cannot shape it as I need.
An example of case two are character cards. No way to shape them according to my layout. I can do that by Excel, of course, but most of character info are just plain text. In this case the priority is using my profile schema, because I need it to write my novels.
This is not a criticism to Scriveners: it is one of the best programs of its kind. Just to explain why I decided to give through with it. The priority is to have what I need to write, and even if the program is nice, it does not match my needs.
I just ran into this issue as well. My solution was to save to a non-My Documents folder.
From Scrivener’s Save File, I created a directory in My Documents and then couldn’t access it. Appears it was created with no permissions set. Even with admin, I cannot delete it.
So I created a folder from outside Scrivener, still in My Documents. Scrivener created a new scriv (Interactive Tutorial) and received, once again, the Location Access Denied error. The directory I had created outside Scrivener had lost all permissions. Another wasted directory.
Finally, I created a folder outside Scrivener and outside My Documents. The folder was placed in C:\Temp\ to prevent any root folder access issues. Scrivener had no issues using this folder.
Worth noting: My computer is English language with no foreign languages set up. Windows 8.1 on a corporate domain. I have full admin access.
