9th APRIL - LEE'S UPDATE - BETA 022 RELEASED

Awesome to hear. Thanks for the update.

Lee,

As a follow up on the document inspector not switching with the current document, I think it’s related to the split screen function. I didn’t have it in split screen but it was acting like it was locked to another document, instead of updating with the currently selected one. I was able to get it updating correctly by switching into and out of split screen mode.

I was also able to duplicate camy’s stacking font issue. It’s not consistent, but if you hit the horizontal split button a few times in succession it stacks up the text every 2nd or 3rd time in the bottom pane. If you click into the bottom pane, however, a part of the text shows normally. It looks like the spacing gets defaulted to 0.125 instead of its actual setting, but only on the bottom pane.

The issue with the Total Word/Character Count is not effected by this, however. It consistently starts out correct, but reverts to document-level word/character count instead of totals if you go to the outliner view on a parent folder and then back to that folder. An interesting note is that each subfolder count gets messed up independently. In other words, if one gets messed up it hasn’t effected another sibling level folder in the same tree. It always shows the total counts correctly the first time you view it, no matter how the other sibling folder counts get messed up. but once you view it and go to its parent, its counts are messed up until you restart the app.

Thanks,
Randy

wrfelts / Lee,

Switching into and out of split screen also forced the document inspector to repopulate correctly for me as well as camy’s stacking font issue. Thanks, wrfelts! It happened again this morning, too, right off the bat for me, making me wonder what the heck I did.

If it helps any, as far as I can remember, last night, I increased my zoom view to make some edits, was not in split mode when I closed the project, but probably swapped between split and non a couple of times. This morning, when I opened my project, the D. Inspector was stuck.

On a copy of the same project (1), I tested out the Project Replace function. It was really fast, and when I looked through the project, all my changes were made (I replaced random letters with ‘x’ to obfuscate my text). However, when I closed the project and re-opened it, nothing had been replaced except my titles. Even my document notes were the same. I tried duplicating the behavior on another project, but I suspect it has to do with the size of the project–and I don’t have any other sample close to the size of my actual project (now 11.5MB).

(1) Not wanting to mess with my original project, I copied the entire .scriv folder and renamed it. Maybe I did something wrong in this step?

Love getting to test drive a new version and excited by extra menus. Not had a good look around yet, but noticed a tiny polishing item. I have added a Scrivener shortcut to my Quick Launch (Win Vista) and while the shortcut opens the new version, the Quick Launch shortcut itself still reads “Scrivener 1.7”. Some little thingy that updates shortcuts on installation would improve the look.

By default, yes, you’ll just get the big green plus icon. It’s possible to add “new text” and “new folder” icons to the toolbar in Edit/Edit Toolbars. They’re just a bit tiny (presumably the same image as in the binder footer). The others all look right, though.

On that note of Edit Toolbars, small polish thing, the window itself when you select “Edit Toolbars” says “Customize Toolbars”–perhaps they should be the same?

What tool are you using and how? Testing both the regular find/replace and the Project Replace on Windows 7 in a small project I have no issues with either, though I need to experiment with a larger project to see if I can replicate the problem of the project replace not “sticking” as scribbles reported.

I apologize for the silliness of the question, but are you sure the inspector isn’t locked? It is possible to have a split editor and lock the inspector (via the padlock icon in the right of the inspector footer) to one of those splits. If you then revert to only one editor but it is the other split, then when you change documents the inspector won’t change–it’s still locked to the (nonexistent) split and showing the last document displayed there. If you then split the editor again, and then revert to a single editor but this time using the “new” split (which is the one the inspector is still locked to), the inspector remains locked but since it’s locked to the active editor it will update as you change documents. If you’re just toggling split on and off and you use the horizontal split, it’s most likely you would inadvertently choose that split the second time, since it’s the one where your mouse still is.

I’m pretty sure the “stuck inspector” bug was mentioned in earlier betas, so it may be something completely different, but I just wanted to rule out the possibility of an accidental lock.

Either way, though, the lock probably shouldn’t be preserved once the editor split is closed since it’s only useful when there is a split. The Mac version automatically disables the lock when you close a split.

Not silly; I’d forgotten all about the little padlock function. For me, it’s definitely not locked. I’ve not used the feature–and when my document inspector gets stuck (like it just did again when I opened the project), the padlock is not locked/pressed. Neither will pressing and de-pressing the padlock work. Randy’s solution of swapping in and out of the split is the only method I’ve found that works.

Okay, I’m almost able to consistently trigger a locked document inspector by doing the following

  1. Open my project
  2. Go into split mode
  3. Add new text to one of the editors
  4. In the editor with the added text, end the split view so that the current editor is now the only single view.
  5. Close the project
  6. Re-open the project
  7. Document inspector is stuck.

Somehow, going into split mode, making sure something’s edited, and then getting out of the split mode (staying in the document that was edited) is triggering it. If I stay in split mode and close+reopen my project, it’s okay. If I go in and out of split mode without any editing, and close+reopen my project, it’s okay.

I didn’t think I had options when it came to the tool. To do a “find” I use Edit/Find. I type a word into the first field and nothing happens. Same is true for an attempt at a local replace using the same tool. Doesn’t matter whether I’ve got one or multiple files selected. I haven’t tried Project Replace or any of the new Formatting Replace functions. If the base doesn’t work, I don’t want to press the issue.

Ok
I just tried the Project Replace function. That works as one would expect (and I’m glad it’s there). Seems that in enabling this feature, however, the basic find/replace has been disabled.

Cheers — Larry

Not a silly question, but I checked. The lock actually did not even work consistently. When locked, the inspector sometimes changed with the selected document, sometimes not. When not locked, same problem. When I was in single-pane mode and the inspector didn’t change, it was not locked.

On a related subject, I think it is the save function that is broken, not the find and replace. Last night I finished up around 1700 words on a fine chapter only to find that only the first half paragraph had been saved :frowning: . I checked and found that another chapter that I made a minor change to afterwards HAD BEEN SAVED. That means that the File/Save function now only seems to save the current document, which might explain scribble not seeing the search and replace changes saved.

I verified the changes by inspecting each physical rtf document entry on disk.

Lee, this is a critical bug :exclamation:

Thanks,

Randy

This sounds as if it could be related to the problem with saving which I have pointed out in another thread: https://forum.literatureandlatte.com/t/major-problem-with-saving-bug-fixed-in-beta-023/12298/1

I second that it is critical - saving is maybe the most important feature, isn’t it?

This release is causing repeated freezing (10-20 secs) of my whole system (Vista)- I think when it decides to auto-save. I have never ever experienced this with Scriviner before, and never with any other software (and I run some vaguely intensive programs - SPSS/Photoshop/gaming).

Thank you all for posting. I am in the process of reviewing and validating all the feedback and will post an update later regarding these.

Lee

Lee - I just fired up your April 10th version but have had to uninstall and revert to the earlier version.

This is due to the fact that the program crashes when I try to copy text from one chapter and paste to another. Pretty serious since I copy and paste all the time.

In an earlier post in the forum I mentioned that I couldn’t drag my chapters into different orders within the binder but now realize that I need to use the cork board!

I hope you can come up with a quick fix for the copy & paste problem since otherwise the version I’m working with expires tonight . . .

Best wishes,

Andrew McIntyre.

Lee,

Since downloading Version 022, I’m having a problem with templates.

I try to create a new project. All the right templates show up in the Create list, including the custom one I made.

But when the project opens, it ignores what I asked for (Novel With Parts) and loads the blank template.

I checked for the templates. All I see in my ProjectTemplates folder is the custom one I made. Even that one won’t open within the project, though.

Not sure what went wrong. I’m a new user so maybe there’s more to the updates than I realized?

Thanks!

Dora

Hello,
I’ve been using the Scrivener BETA for Windows for a couple of weeks, and am loving it!
I did find a problem after downloading the newest version this morning.
The document inspector on the right will not change no matter what folder or document I’m in. It is displaying the same one (index card, document notes, etc.) all the time.
Someone else mentioned the same problem on this thread, and said it was inconsistent for him, but it is consistent for me. As the previous poster said, when in Full Screen mode, the document inspector displays correctly. I reinstalled, but no change.
I am running Windows Vista.
Thanks!
Tracy
update: in reading through all the posts here i saw someone mention that switching into and back out of split screen could reset the document inspector. This worked for me.

Having a problem with the split screen in 2.2: I go to horizontal split screen and then choose another file to show. The file shows in the lower screen even when I try to select it to go to the upper split screen. toggling in and out of split screen seems to fix it.

Edited to add: for whatever reason 2.2 is also failing to ‘learn’ new words - since this was fixed c. 1.6 it’s been totally fine, but now the red underscore is just staying put come hell or high water.

Otherwise, loving the newer faster beta!

I hope this is just something with my set-up, and not a bug:

Still can’t get the created/modified date to function properly in the inspector. I have tried in the tutorial and in a document of my own creation. The date remains the creation date even when “modified” is selected. I have tried typing random letters into both the tutorial and my document, then changing between “created” and “modified”. I have tried saving with the random letters and switching back and forth. I have tried closing the program and re-opening it after the save and switching back and forth. No matter what I do, the date does not change. I have tried this with each release, and it has never worked for me.

I am running Windows XP, sp3.

Thanks, Lunarclipper

Hi Lee,

I posted these two on the 0.2.1. bug forum on Sunday - but now found that this stream carries 0.2.2 - related bugs so I’m reproducing both posts here for your convenience. Great job so far, keep up the good work.

"Found a bug (?):

I decided to organize all my research notes for my latest novel in Scrivener. I’ve just installed 0.2.2 Beta and so far so good.

The notes were voluminous (multiple docs totally about 1500 pages) so I did a multiple select (Ctrl+C) of about 20 of these docs and imported them into the Binder’s Research section. Took a little while to do, because of the volume, but they appeared in the Binder as a list. Next I wanted to open the Corkboard view of the Research folder and add some comments to the resultant cards. For a second or two the Corkboard showed (blank though - didn’t even show the single Import I had done as a test beforehand which had shown correctly in the Corkboard before) and then Scrivener crashed (not functioning message and death!)

Couldn’t find any reference to problems with multiple imports like this on the forum’s bug lists, hence this report.

Keep up the great work. I also would be willing to pay for Scriv NOW. Been writing for 40-odd years, and this tool is Nirvana for me - fit’s my workstyle perfectly.

Me again

more on the import to Research problem:

I can click on the individual docs on the Binder’s list and these open correctly. I can write a comment in the text field in the Inspector. But if I try to open a Corkboard or Outline views, Scriv displays the screen format but the “data” area is blank - not 1 entry.

Also if I click on the Research tab in the Binder, Scrivener crashes.

I’ll keep playing with this to see if I can generate any more clues.

Cheers

Platform: Windows 7

I am also experiencing this issue. Luckily I created the template by creating a project over several days so I can just Save As original project
but it is definitely an issue.

ETA: Using Save As causes Scrivener to crash. To duplicate project I had to copy and paste the .scriv folder.

Scrivener Crashes when trying to type in the parent file of grouped files. You can type in Scrivenings mode but not in editor mode. If I ungroup the files I can type in the file as normal.

Hi All,

I will be releasing an update fix for most of the reported bugs later this week. We started working on these fixes yesterday and will release as soon as we can. There are some reported issues that we simply can not duplicate at all. I have listed them in this post as well.

Bugs we’re currently working at fixing:

  1. CRASH - Scrivener Crashes when trying to type in the parent file of grouped files. You can type in Scrivenings mode but not in editor mode. If I ungroup the files I can type in the file as normal.

  2. Project search and replace doesn’t save changes.

  3. Templates all load Blank Template

  4. Split Mashed Screen using split screen - the text in the bottom pane is always scrambled. Selecting the pane and picking a new document sorts it out, but the next time spilt screen is selected the problem is back.

  5. Adding to collection adds docs in random order instead of binder order.

  6. Binder icon not refreshed when drag and drop of multiple docs importing to draft folder.

  7. Ctrl + Alt + V (Paste and Match Style) works on the regular editor but not on Fullscreen.

  8. Total Word Count Outliner. When you look at the document outliner in a sub-folder, it initially shows correctly. When you switch to its parent, the parent shows correctly. When you switch back to the sub-folder, it shows the single document word count (and character counts) for the Total word count. Nothing but restarting the app brings it back. Other than those, rather disconcerting bugs, the product is really shaping up.

  9. Issue importing Chinese from Word 2010, works from UTF-8 text but not Word.

  10. Zip backup broken. It looks like our attempt to fix the 7Zip issue has broken zip entirely. We are removing the attempted fix and resorting back to standard zip support we had previously. Please note that 7Zip was an OpenOffice format on the Linux platform. We were initially reluctant to change the default linux flags to windows flags as we thought that ODT might rely on it being unix based.

We tried to force a flag to say whether to write a unix zip or a windows zip. A detailed explaination follows for those so inclined to read, but moving forward Scrivener will not address what we think is a 7Zip bug on Windows, and create zips as before and require the opening of that zip file using the built in Windows zip functionality and not 7zip.

For the tech savvy, you can see from the following code extract that Scrivener Qt C++ is indeed writing the correct S_IFDIR flag when writing out a directory into the external_file_attributes:

switch (type) { case File: mode |= S_IFREG; break; case Directory: mode |= S_IFDIR; break; case Symlink: mode |= S_IFLNK; break; } writeUInt(header.h.external_file_attributes, mode << 16);

Qt (Scrivener’s framework) always writes 3 into this field, indicating created by UNIX and hence indicating that the file attributes are for unix. Which in turn makes it ignore the external file flags and drop the directory flag. We’re guessing that windows either doesn’t rely on the flags or knows how to interpret unix flags, whereas 7zip doesn’t? In which case Qt’s zip writer matches spec, by saying ‘unix created’ it also indicates that the flags will be based on unix flags, which it seems to go to a deal of effort to achieve.

The full spcification is: pkware.com/documents/casestudies/APPNOTE.TXT - See Explanation of fields for version made by and external file attributes.

The following reported issues I have not been able to duplicate on XP, Vista, Win7 or Linux. As we can’t duplicate, naturally we can’t fix. This is a little perterbing as they all represent basic functionality that has been working for some time. My immediate thoughts are that after many installs and updates something has become corrupted. So, I would first do a complete uninstall of Scrivener. Backup any projects in the Scrivener directory if they exist there. Then delete the Scrivener directory completely and try installing again. If this doesn’t fix these issues, then any screen shots or preferably video casts would be greatly appreciated as we’re powerless to address these currently. Here is a list of all the issues reported that we’re unable to duplicate and are working on all the environments we have here:

Reported issues we can’t duplicate on XP, Vista, Win7 or Linux:

  1. All issues with ‘stuck inspector’ i.e. clicking through binder doesn’t update inspector.
(No joy with re-producing this. A screencast would be perfect here.)

  2. All issues with ‘stuck split screen’ i.e. split not updating when clicking through docs in binder.
(No joy with re-producing this. A screencast would be perfect here.)

  3. Compile to PDF, I think Compile to PDF may be broken this time, and quite possibly for releases before as I had some silent trouble with this last night. Even on a very short fresh project, it runs for a while, then stops before the progress bar completes, and the result can’t be opened. Compiling to Print, and printing to Acrobat, pdfs are fine.
(No joy with re-producing this. A screencast would be perfect here.)

  4. CRASH - Drag and Drop import to binder (multi docs)

(No joy with re-producing this. A screencast would be perfect here.)

  1. Freezing 10-20 seconds - This release is causing repeated freezing (10-20 secs) of my whole system (Vista)- I think when it decides to auto-save. I have never ever experienced this with Scriviner before, and never with any other software (and I run some vaguely intensive programs - SPSS/Photoshop/gaming). (No joy with re-producing this. A screencast would be perfect here.)

  2. I know it’s not high on the priority, but if a backup is on a big enough project (my project folder is now 11MB), it takes at least a few seconds. And if I click within the program before it’s done, it freezes up. Half of the time it’ll unfreeze, the other half it’ll crash completely. I forgot last week and went clickity-click and boo! It doesn’t have to be an animation, just a “Please wait” and a close button that is disabled–and then a “Backup done!” with the close button enabled at the end of the process? (I tried a 1GB project backup and could’t get Scrivener to crash - a screencast would be perfect if you can do it).

  3. Learn Spelling - Doesn’t work now in beta 2.2 did before?
(No joy with re-producing this. A screencast would be perfect here.)

  4. Inspector Modified Date shows Created
(No joy with re-producing this. A screencast would be perfect here i.e. create a new doc, modify it and then mouse through the inspector element.)

Other issues:

  1. Saving as docx without Word 2007 or 2010 just 2003 with Word docx plug-in.
Scrivener does not currently detect this plug-in in Word and I’m not sure we want to go down this track either as MS might change the way Word detects this at any moment and thus break Scrivener. For now I’ll say that Scrivener does not support this. Maybe that could change down the track?

  2. Progress bars when waiting - we’ll continue to add these bespoke as we’re unable to add a global wait progress bar at this stage. These bespoke elements will remain user demand driven for tasks until we figure a way of dealing with this issue properly.

Regards

Lee
