A Note About Upgrading to macOS Catalina

Just have a look in the Mac Bugs forum and the Mac Beta forum!

You will need to use the button in the Format Bar by hand, for the moment. It’s just the shortcut and menu command that are incorrectly disabled.

I went through this this morning. You should know that the dialog asks for license name and license number(?) but what it wants is email address and serial number. Just a little extra confusion.

I just opened Scrivener 3.1.3 today (Catalina update last week). Message came up that I needed to upgrade Scrivener, which I did. Then it says I must purchase or the trial version will end.

Unfortunately when I went to add the license my current license was not accepted. (Have used Scrivener for several years and have always updated licenses when needed). Scrivener has never asked to be deactivated in the past.

Anyway, the only option is to “deactivate Scrivener.” So I am at an impasse. Do I deactivate, and then somehow magically my license will be accepted?

When you say it “asks to be deactivated”, what is the precise wording of that message? I’m not familiar with any processes that would ask you to deactivate manually, presumably so you can activate again, because it’s not activated but yet you can deactivate it? Seems like you’re in a bit of a Catch-22 by literal description.

At any rate, I would download 3.1.4 before giving this problem too much time. There were known issues with the Paddle component that was shipped with 3.1.3, with regards to 10.15.

I had upgraded to Scrivener 3.1.4 the day a couple days before.

Now the window that asks to be deactivated does not appear. However, when I enter my email and license, I get a message that there is no account with that information. When I click on “recover lost license.” I receive an email that there is no account with that information.

Given how long you’ve been a Scrivener user, it’s more likely the second field on that recovery page is what you want. You would have purchased Scrivener 3 before this summer, when we switched to Paddle, right?

Thank you for the patience. Issue resolved and now Scrivener licensed again

Excellent! Sorry for the hassle, but at least now you have a copy you can save in the email archives for the future.

Both the support form and support email address on the Contact Us page gave me an “undelivered” auto-response, so I’m trying here!

I upgraded to Catalina and got the request to put in my license code to re-activate, but the License Retrieval page is telling me that no orders were found for my email address (or any of my alternate email addresses). I purchased my license early this year, before June, but I tried both boxes on that page just in case. Got nothing back from either.

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks for any help!

Could it be something like this (for the Scapple app):

I hope that when the next MacOS upgrades comes around, you’ll have changed things so that we don’t have to dig up our old license email. That didn’t happen for any of my other apps.

As explained in the post referenced at the beginning of this thread, the issue was that Paddle needed to update their frameworks for Catalina compatibility. We certainly hope that will be a rare occurrence.

I really need to understand step by step HOW to re-install Scriviner after macOS Catalina upgrade. I’m terrified that I’ve lost my manuscript for good even though I’ve been backing up often. It’s backing up as a Scriviner Project which is not readable.

The message that keeps appearing is “Scriviner” needs to be updated. The developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of macOS. Contact the developer for more information.

Can someone explain my next steps clearly?

thanks in advance.

Are you using Scrivener version 2 or version 3? You can check by clicking on Scrivener in the menu bar and clicking About Scrivener.

Version 2 will not work on Catalina, as it is a 32-bit app. Apple has dropped support for all 32-bit apps with Catalina, and has flagged this change for a couple of years.

Version 3 of Scrivener is required for Catalina. With respect to losing work, you don’t need to worry about that.

  • Download Scrivener 3 from here: literatureandlatte.com/scrivener/download

  • Open the DMG file. Drag Scrivener to your Applications folder. Launch it.

  • Using the File -> Open Project command, locate your project and open it. Scrivener will ask to update the project format. Say yes. Confirm that your work is intact.

Once you’ve reassured yourself, you’ll need to update your license, which you can do here:
literatureandlatte.com/stor … ?tab=macOS

You’ll also find that there are quite a few changes, so instead of diving into your own work I’d recommend taking a look at our upgrade guide for Scrivener 2 users, here:

I upgraded to Catlina and now am being asked for my license to activate the software. When I enter the license I’m told it doesn’t work. I’ve contacted support and received only one email - no the solution was sent.

This is what I received:

"Can you please provide details of the activation details you have been attempting to use with Scrivener? We’ll then hopefully be able to guide you accurately.

Thank you for supporting Scrivener. We hope you enjoy using the application.

All the best,
David"

I responded with my receipt and the activation code. But again no response or solution was sent. I am running Scrivener 3.1.4.

Any help?

I’ve sent a response via your ticket in the system. Sorry for the confusion, but it looks like a spam filter or something might have deleted your previous message.

Iona,

I’ve sent a response and the information you requested - waiting for your reply.

Hmm, still no luck! Maybe it’s still working its way through the system if you just sent it, but feel free to use the PM contact below my profile icon here on the forum. You can attach files to a private message and we can sort things out that way. Sorry for the hassle.
