I might not be thinking of the same things you are, because only some custom icons are a bit awkward with tinting applied over them. Certainly not the point to say that the feature “isn’t great” because “all available icons” don’t work! There are a number of custom icons that work great with labels, one is even very close to what you describe: the white Notebook variant. It’s not a simple square, but it certainly conveys the label colour cleanly. There are also some flags that work great, and a few others that I’ve never had issue with. Plus the regular folder icons in Scrivener all turn white when you turn this option on, so there should be no problem labelling them or text documents either. It’s really only an issue if you choose something stylistic like Lectern or Light Bulb, no?
I’m not saying the icons don’t work. They all convey some information. All I’m saying is that when it comes to color, a simple patch would work best.
The White Notebook, or the Tables, are better than the default icon, but they still have lines on them. A good icon would be the To Do, but without the check mark–look at how brighter the yellow is beneath the check mark compared to the standard or White Notebook icons with a yellow label.
“Plus the regular folder icons in Scrivener all turn white when you turn this option on.” You mean it’s possible to remove the scribblings from the default document icons? Please let me know where this option is. Thanks.
Okay, so you don’t want any kind of depiction of objects in the icon, just a square/disc/whatever that can be freely tinted with the label. That makes sense to me, but perhaps I do not understand why you cannot achieve this with a custom icon that is what you describe? I made a very simple one to demonstrate the idea. I put a subtle border around it, and rounded the corners a touch, because I felt just throwing a shock white rectangle into the Binder would be ugly. Here is the result, with some example labels and the appearance on an index card:
The icon files are attached below. There is a high/low-res variant designed to work on Macs with Retina displays. The 16px PNG might work better on Windows if the other one is blurry.
That’s exactly what I was trying to do. But my white icon didn’t color according to label.
Now I’ve tried with both of your icons: same thing; they remain white…Yet it seems to work for you. What’s going on here?
Hmm, that should be working, perhaps there is a bug. I’ve made a note to check up on that when I’m at my PC later today. Does label tint work for any icons you’ve uploaded into the software at all? It should be treating them the same as the built-in icons, I can’t think of any technical reason for why it wouldn’t, either.
What has happened to this bug? After asking for the same thing in Technical Support a few days ago, I found this post, which exactly describes my problem/wish.
