I have scrivener macbook. I want to add the IOS app. I have to buy that one? How to synchronise without dropbox?

  1. Yes, iOS Scrivener is a separate program and a separate purchase.
  2. iOS Scriv has built-in direct sync support only for Dropbox. If you search this forum you will find various approaches to “syncing” projects between iOS Scriv and your desktop/laptop in other ways. All of these will be more work for you and require more presence of mind than Dropbox.

In your copy of the Scrivener for Mac user manual PDF, refer to §14.2.3, Managing Projects Directly, for a variety of methods. While not documented there, it is even possible to set up your own live syncing using SyncThing. I’ve never tried it myself, though I’ve heard multiple positive reports.

The forum has multiple conversations on this however, so I would invite looking around a bit and contribute to one of those if you have further questions.

Basically, you can only synchronize via Dropbox. You can however exchange files with any other cloud service.

Direct sync with Dropbox is the easiest way:

  1. Put the files in a Dropbox folder.
  2. Work on them.
  3. Close the project, and let Dropbox synchronize it for you.
  4. Let it synchronize (Dropbox shows it with an icon in the file and the menubar).
  5. Open the project in the other device.
  6. Work on it.
  7. Close the project.

If you work on a modern OS, see if you can make the Scrivener files in Dropbox available offline. This will make them safer. Older OSs might not have this option.

The other options are just file sharing. You work on a project, and when in the other device you open the file.
