Just wondering if you are still planning on adding support for more variables in the header and footer. I’d really like to use $t to make alternating headers on facing pages, with the left page saying “Chapter <$t>” and the right page having the chapter title.
This is one case where teaming Scrivener with Scribus for the final stages of printing might help the workflow …
i.e.
(1) compile Scrivener content as *.odt or *.doc format
(2) in Scribus create textframes and imageframes in a Scribus new document template
(3) include footers and headers as separate textframes on left and right pages
(4) link your textframes in Scribus so that your content overflows from textframe to next textframe
(5) import your exported Scrivener content into Scribus textframes using right click on textframe and “Get Text” (the text being your Scrivener produced dociument).
(6) same applies to importing images.

So Scrivener is now the content manager
and Scribus is the layout manager to the point of printing.
You can already do that on the Mac version…
