Apple LiSung font odd behavior

Thank you both for the help on this!

True, seen at that size. I presume you “squished” EB Garamond using Affinity Designer/Photo? You couldn’t do that for text in the editor. Would you spend time creating a squished version of the EB Garamond font set? I wouldn’t… it’s the sort of project I could like, but the time needed would be more than I have available.

Of course.

Of course not. I just found it interesting to compare them side by side (which also shows that Apple put effort into it beyond “just squishing”). If I wanted to capture the spirit of those Apple ads, without paying Adobe or annoying the readers, I’d go with EB Garamond.

It seems Apple Garamond is available on dafont.com. The site doesn’t actually give any licence information, and there is none in the download, so @gurneydog, you go with it at your own risk.

Further info from dafont.com comments on Apple Garamond:

If you’re seeking a commercial license you will not likely to get a response here, as the fonts were probably posted by someone who doesn’t have the rights to them. Apple Garamond Apple Garamond in use - Fonts In Use was commissioned by Apple, Inc. for their own use. It’s a condensed version of ITC Garamond, which you can license here: ITC Garamond Font | Webfont & Desktop | MyFonts

ITC Garamond will cost you $45+ per style or $700+ for the full set!

That said, thinking back to much earlier machines (ca 20 years ago) I remember they I had a “Garamond” font as well as the Adobe Garamond versions which came with PageMaker and InDesign… I didn’t like it for precisely the reasons @November_Sierra gives, so used Adobe Garamond (Pro) as my preferred font (I still do!). But perhaps Apple released their version for use with System 8 and 9. Perhaps it was a Postscript font that they didn’t convert to ttf/otf.

Looks like I wasn’t the only one pondering last night (“What if somebody did release those modified versions?”). :face_with_peeking_eye:

ADD: I guess the subset “ITC Garamond Narrow” will do, which brings the price down to just $270. (Or half of that without “Light” and “Ultra”.)
