Auto Backup is not working and can't be reset

When I closed a file today, I received a message that the backup file could not be opened. Using file manager, I went to the location and saw no problem. I have tried the following:

  • I opened and clicked . That cleared the backup entry field

  • I created a new folder on my cloud drive

  • I tried to enter the new backup folder in the backup entry field

  • I received a message “The File could not be opened”

  • I opened “Authorize Folder Access”

  • I tried to add the new backup folder to the list of folders. The application did not add the folder name.

  • I tried the process above again and it still doesn’t allow me to create a new backup folder or save to the old backup folder. It gives me the “file could not be opened” each time.

Did you setup your backup location from within Scrivener. If not, it’s advisable to do so and tick the required boxes, too.
Which cloud service are you using?

What security software do you have running?

Do you see the same issue if you create the folder on a local drive, rather than a cloud drive?

Yes, Indeed that was my second try after I logged off the forum. I created a new backup folder on my hard-drive and attempted to point to the new directory. I received the same message.

I just saw this question. I am running Norton. I can try to close it and see if the problem reoccurs.

Ok–reply#3–the problem may be resolved.

To consolidate answers, I use Norton.

On the first try, I tried creating a folder on my hard drive as MacintoshHD\Users\MarianMoore\Backup2024
Upon doing so, I received an error message “The file could not be opened”
(I had screenshots, but this interface doesn’t allow screenshots)

This evening, I created a folder on my desktop from within Scrivner as Desktop\Backup2024 and it looks as if it created a folder successfully.
I created a test line in a scriv. document and saved it. I checked the directory and there is a backup file in the directory.

Perhaps the problem was creating the directory outside of Scrivner because it looks as if Desktop directory is actually on my icloud drive.

Ah–to answer another question, my iCloud is the cloud space purchased from apple.com

If that’s the case, it might be that Norton is not allowing Scrivener to access folders that it didn’t create. You might check with their support to see how to fix that, because it might come back to bite you later.
