Autonumbering for Journal Articles? Sections + Subsections?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to set up my default section layouts to make for as easy as possible compiling to a humanities journal article format. What I would like to be able to do is for all sections, is to have a bulleted number “1” and for all sub-sections, repeat the section number and add in a subsection number “1.1”, 1.2 1.3 and so on. I tried to do this by adding <$n>. as a prefix to my title options for sections, and <$n>.<$sn> for subsections. The issue I have run into, however, is that my numbering gets messed up for sections following subsections (the <$n>. resets before it needs to in the subsection heading.) Any suggestions on what I can do to produce what I want? Is it silly to include these in title options of the section/sub-section layout? Should I add them in manually in the text as I write? Any help appreciated!

Not at all. Placing Placeholder in the prefix and suffix in the Title Options tab of the formatting Editor of a Section Layout keeps the Placeholder out of your writing. It’s one of the seminal places to use Placeholder, actually.

Thanks so much! I used the $hn and the autonumbering turned out great, I really appreciate your help!!
