Backing up to DropBox?

Hello and thanks for any help here.

New to Scrivener. I have the iOS and Mac versions.

Is it possible for all versions to access the same backup location?

In the settings I only see a place to enter a local hard drive location, yet I’ve also seen it mentioned on the Scrivener site that DropBox can be used as a main backup location.

How would you set this up? I see no place to enter the cloud address information. Thanks.

Dropbox is just an example given, wherever you read that, I’m sure. Anything that automatically uploads the contents of a folder to some other location will achieve an “off site copy”, and any tech that can synchronise the contents of that folder between multiple devices will allow them all to share the same pool of backups. I use Tresorit myself, and it works nicely across four different operating systems.

The technique is described in parallel to a larger workflow, in this knowledge base article. Whether that larger workflow is of interest to you, the setup guide for the backup folder is what may be good to look through. Making it so each machine is using the same settings can reduce confusion considerably.

Of special note for the iOS version though, it has no automatic backup. In practice this isn’t too much of a problem though as it is a few taps to zip compress your backup and store it in the same location everything else does. This article goes more specifically into how to back up projects on iOS. The first three-step method is the one I use. The others are perhaps more valuable for bulk backups, or cases where you can’t load Scrivener for some reason and want to make sure all your projects on the device are copied somewhere safe before reinstalling.

Thank you AmberV, lots of good information there :+1:

Mac/Windows Scrivener always save to local hard disk locations. You may certainly share those locations with a cloud service if you prefer.

Note that we do not recommend depending on a synchronization service as your only backup for critical data. An error on one system will propagate to all connected systems at the speed of your internet connection.
