Best practice for operating without Internet

If I am out of Internet range when using Scrivener on iOS should I be backing up to a thumb drive or something like that? I’d hate to lost my work because I’m not sending to Dropbox.

Thanks.

With all due respect, you should be using a portable storage device, no matter what. Even you store your work on another service, you should have your own work on your own storage device for all sorts of reasons. And some of those reasons folks scoff at, but do happen.

And that “sending to Dropbox” sort of scares me from the security point of view.

I just bumped a thread that had a lot of useful information about security, but I thought one point made by a rep here was that Scrivener was totally independent and so certain security protocols need be of no concern.

Well, that could very well be true, and if you use your own portable storage device for backup there is less of any security concern; but how many of you folks in this Community rely on sending your saved work off to some other site to store it?

You start sending your stuff over the Net, security raises its head. And there is a myth that encryption is so cool there is no need for worry. That is NOT true.

Well, many of you are going to come in here and burn me for my thought processes on security, but . . .

Pam, use at least two portable storage devices for complete peace of mind. Never rely on just a single portable storage device!

Our advice for keeping iOS Scrivener backed up:

It’s impossible to have too many backups. (Just make sure you can keep track of which version is which.)

Think about it like this: how much data are you willing to lose? Make your backup at least that interval or smaller: daily if you don’t want to lose a day’s work, weekly if you’re okay with losing a week.

And please remember that Dropbox’s SYNC service is not a good backup. Any flaw on any device that syncs will sync the flaw. Dropbox’s BACKUP service is a good.

I know you are asking about backup without internet, but I thought I would mention that when the internet is available please don’t count on Dropbox sync as backup.
