Binder keeps freezing in Scrivener for Mac v 3.3.6

First of all, I’m gradually getting used to the switch from Windows, and I’m definitely loving the Mac version as I find out where things are… However, my binder keeps freezing.

I can have one project open or six, and the binder will randomly freeze, greying everything out and not letting me select anything. It can be a new project or an old project and it randomly happens.

I have to close Scrivener down and reopen it and everything works fine, until the next time. But it’s happening several times a week.

I have a brand-new Mac Mini M2 on Sonoma 14.6.1. I use Scrivener every day.

Two options to check, both on the Navigate menu, are Editor → Lock in Place and Binder Selection Affects.

If neither of those fixes the problem, could you post a screenshot? I’ll check your trust settings to make sure you can.

Thank you!

I’ve done the first option now, Locked Editor in Place (thanks for the tip!), but Binder Selection Affects is already ticked for Current Editor and the only other option I have is None. Everything else is greyed out.

I’ll see how that goes, and if it happens again, I’ll certainly grab a screenshot.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the tip.

It did work for a while, but then it wouldn’t let me change any of the chapter headings in the binder, like if I duplicated a chapter, it kept the original file/folder and wouldn’t let me change it. I could change the content, but not the titles. So I turned off the Editor, Lock in Place.

It worked for about a day, then, mid-work, it suddenly froze the binder again. It looked normal, it didn’t grey it out (I must have imagined that before). It just wouldn’t let me do anything. So I don’t think a screenshot would be of any use.

I couldn’t Close Project, I had to Quit Scrivener. It’s as though it’s crashing, but it’s letting me Quit from the menu at the top.

:unamused:

What else is running on your system? This kind of weird behavior is often a sign of something like a shortcut conflict.

Hmm, I’m not one to have a lot of programs open at the same time, if that’s what you mean. At most I might have 2 or 3 Scrivener files open, usually 2, my project management (TickTick), and possibly LibreOffice too, which also keeps crashing, actually. I even close Safari down. But I could check and make a note…

If LibreOffice is also crashing, there’s a good chance that there’s a larger system issue involved. Both Scrivener and LibreOffice are usually pretty stable.

Okay, I’ll make a note next time it happens, see if I can determine if it’s that. Many thanks! (Again!)

The Mac is brand-new, so I don’t think I will have broken it just yet…

Best to call Apple Support or consult with the Geniuses at the Apple store where you bought it. They have advanced diagnostic software to check your system’s hardware and software.
