Hi, I’ve been using Scrivener for over ten years, so it seems silly to be asking such a newbie question, but I haven’t been able to Google my way out of this.
This hasn’t always happened, but it seems to be a given these days. When I compile as a Word doc, Scrivener places a bookmark at the beginning of each separate scrivener document, into the final .doc. How can I turn this off? It’s especially noticeable when I export the file to Google Docs, but it doesn’t seem to be a specific Google Docs issue. This is unrelated to the program’s Bookmark feature: I’m talking Word bookmarks.
I’m sure there’s a setting I’m missing, but I can’t seem to find it.
This setting is found in the Section Layouts: Settings tab, as Include in RTF bookmarks. Just go through the list of at least all the Layouts that are bold face, those are the ones that your project is making use of, and disable the checkbox.
If you’ve never tweaked a compile Format before, the quickest way into the right area is to double-click on any of the preview tiles in the central column of the compile overview screen. You’ll be asked to duplicate the format if it is a built-in, this is fine. You might as well set it to be saved to “My Projects” and rename it to something useful, like “Manuscript (Times) No Bookmarks”. That will make it available to all projects you use in the future.
Do note that this will break the ability to cross-reference between sections with hyperlinks, or refer to sections by page number, the latter of which impacts the ToC (but if you are using a word processor it is better to build one from the heading styles anyway).
