Bugs on Mac Scrivener: headings and bullets

First, all my bullet points stopped functioning. Now, all my headers are merging with the text underneath them. The app has become basically unusable- I can’t read any of my work without nearly getting an aneurysm. I can’t make sense of anything. Can’t attach an image because I just made this account. Pls send help, I am writing my dissertation on Scrivener. I don’t want to move all my work to another app.

Details of system, and Scrivener version before we can help.

Hi @saraalmalla.

Have you just posted this query on reddit under thatpdhbitch?

That thread has a screenshot:

Let me know if it isn’t you and I’ll delete the screenshot!

But assuming it is:

There are a couple of obvious points about the ‘headings’ from your screenshot.

The red box around the headings and subsequent body text paragraph suggests that you’ve either got Format > Preserve Formatting set, or you have a style defined with Draw highlight box around text enabled.

If it’s the latter, then it’s unusual for a Paragraph style to have two separate lines with different formatting – you have bold on the first line and standard on the second. That normally suggests that you’re manually applying formatting to the bold ‘heading’ line, instead of using a dedicated style. (It’s a bad idea to manually format headings like this…)

Obviously, it’s impossible for us to tell whether that’s the case from a screen shot, so the first thing to do is tell us how you originally set the headings up – what steps did you take, exactly?

Once you’ve explained the steps you’ve taken (and confirmed the version of Scrivener and MacOS you’re using), we’ll have a better chance of finding out what’s going on, and if there is a bug.

To update on the status of any known bugs that fit these descriptions:

  • The bullet bug is fixed in 3.5, so you shouldn’t be seeing that happen any more. You will of course need to fix any lists that were damaged in the past.
  • As for some paragraph styles showing up on the following lines, this has been fixed and will be in the next update, which should be out soon. The good news is that this problem is largely cosmetic. It will have a functionally incorrect result in 3.5 if you compile, but the markers that show where styles start and stop aren’t in the wrong place, they are just being interpreted incorrectly. So once this is fixed everything will go back to way it should be.
