Bullet Synopsis

I’d like to see a formatting option for the Synopsis in the Inspector that would allow me to bullet point the contents of the synopsis.

I use asterisks because I find this easier, but you can type in bullets on a Mac with Opt-8 as well. This is a plain-text field though, so it can’t have bullet lists in the sense you might be thinking of.

I’m almost certain that I used bullet points on the corkboard in earlier versions of Scrivener.
But now I can’t enter bullets on notecards, and I can’t check that all my old Scrivener projects used bullet points, because I can’t open them without converting them.
I really want to use bullets to make outlines on notecards.
Unformatted text is not nearly as clear.

It’s likely you were using the tip above, you can make a list anywhere you want to. What often gets thought of as list is a macro that puts another “•” at the beginning of the line when you press return. :slight_smile:

By the way, you can experimentally open an older project by duplicating a copy some place temporary (I use Downloads for this kind of disposable stuff), with Finder or File Explorer, and then opening the duplicate.

What I even prefer to do is zip up any projects I’m completely done with, and get rid of any live copies left hanging around. That way if I ever want to load up an old project without “hurting it”, it happens naturally because unzipping creates a new copy that can opened, looked at, then deleted once I’m done.

I too would love to see bullets or even just the ability to propertly use a return within the synopsis without the return messing up the export to CSV. With the return, the CSV thinks each line (separated by a return) is a separte element. The only way to have the export treat it as one element is to have everything strung together without any <> being used. Or perhaps there is a way to do “soft” return? Probably not explaining it well because I don’t know the technical terms to express what I’m saying.

Well if your intention is to produce valid CSV from the data you supply to the software, you would need to take care that it conforms to the rules. We could maybe try and do something automatic, but there isn’t to my knowledge a standard for inserting instructions to create newlines within a format that is meant to be one line per row. I could be wrong about that.

You might consider using Compile instead of the standard CSV export if you need something fancier. Consider for example the “Prefix” tab in Section Layouts, where you could insert something like "<$title>", "<$label>", "<$synopsis>", and then use Replacements to clean out potential issues like newlines.

Overall though, I would say that how Scrivener has a feature for CSV export of metadata kind of fits within its “limitations” of treating the synopsis field as a single simple line of data. Going beyond that will stress these features. You can of course more freely type in the Inspector, bear in mind.

So, is there an existing macro that puts another “•” at the beginning of the line when you press return, which I can use? Is it possible for users to create macros?

AutoHotKey is the tool most people recommend for Windows. Whether it is easier to come up with something in that, or just typing, I don’t know. I’m perhaps the wrong person to ask because I’m so used to just typing out lists including the bullets (as asterisks) or numbering. I’ve never used the rich text feature much.
