Can I add a Scrivener project that was created using Scrivener (Windows) to Dropbox, and then open that same file in Scrivener (App) on my iPhone and iPad?
Additionally, through the Scrivener App on my iPhone and iPad, I’m unable to see how to direct it to the correct Dropbox. Where do I do this from within the Scrivener App?
For directions on iPhone/iPad: in the Scrivener app, open the provided Tutorial project, tap on Draft in the Binder area, then tap on the section on Syncing. (Note the cautionary note about not storing other stuff in the folder you use for Scrivener projects on Dropbox.)
Thanks, gr, I’ve done that now I need to link the iPhone Scrivener to the same Dropbox where the iPad and MacBook sit. Looking at the iPhone Scrivener App, I see no way to direct it to that same Dropbox. Can you help me with that to, please, gr?
Yeah, I’ve looked at that, Owen, I’m stumped with the first sentance, though. I have nothing to select to link to the Dropbox, where I can choose to change it. That’s where I’m stuck mate.
This is more about the format of Scrivener on my iPhone 15 Pro Max and fully understanding why I’m not able to choose a Dropbox directory to link to, rather than having it refresh to the wrong Dropbox automatically. Can I change the Default with that, please?
If you haven’t actually set up Dropbox with a folder to sync to yet, that’s fine. Just accept the default (which will use Apps/Scrivener) and it will create the folders for you. You should, back on your PC, see these folders appear after a few seconds, so long as you have the Dropbox client running on it.
Now all you need to do is put projects in it. If you’ve already got a project started, you’ll want to close it on Windows, and then drag and drop the entire “my project name.scriv” folder into this new Dropbox/Apps/Scrivener folder.
On the PC you need to be more aware of using that folder specifically, but on iOS it will just use that folder automatically whenever you create a Dropbox-synced project. It can only “attach” itself to one folder at a time.
Though people have already given some direction, FYI, here is the general way to get to the Dropbox settings in Scriv on IPhone.
At the main screen in the Scriv app, tap Edit (upper right corner). A gear icon will appear at bottom right. Tap that. Dropbox Settings menu item will be on the resulting menu.
I’m a new user as well and I have a separate but related question. Can I use OneDrive rather than Dropbox? I want to use Scrivener on my Windows laptop and my iPhone. I’ve saved the Windows program on my OneDrive, including the .exe file for the program itself, and all the document files. I’m looking for clarification on this question before I buy the app for my phone. Thanks!
No.
The iOS version of Scrivener can only synchronize projects with Dropbox, which is a built-in feature, not dependent on the system’s cloud capability.
Although using OneDrive theoretically works, it’s too cumbersome. When you need to sync, you have to manually copy and paste the entire project.
Unless your network is unable to access Dropbox, I suggest you use the officially recommended cloud sync solution.
And the iOS version currently lacks many features and does not support trials. If you cannot sync with Dropbox, I do not recommend purchasing it.
Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it! It’s unfortunate that you can’t get a trial of the iOS app so I can test the functionality myself. I’m on the 30-day trial of the Windows version and I’m enjoying it, but I’m not going to spend additional $$ only to find out the versions don’t easily share files.
True “synchronization” – where Scrivener automatically uploads/downloads files to make projects identical across systems – on the iPad is only possible with Dropbox.
You can use a variety of methods to transfer data to/from the iPad, though, and once there Scrivener can access it. An overview of the available tools can be found here:
