Hi, I’ve had Scrivener for years but haven’t needed to use it to its fullest till now. However, my local printer needs a file in PDF format. When I go to Export I don’t see an option to use PDF. Is this possible? Any help will be appreciated. I even did a search but couldn’t find anything.
You need to use the compile option and select PDF format.
Are you talking about a “file” or the entire project?
Hi, the entire project, yes. Thanks for replying so quickly.
Oh. Ok, that’s very helpful, much appreciated kind sir.
Hello @Luv2write, to help us advise,
- let us know if you’re on Windows, Mac, or Linux via Wine/Lutris/etc. and which version of the OS;
- let us know which version of Scrivener too.
As for creating a PDF, although you can compile directly to PDF from Scrivener, this is really intended for proofing purposes only; that’s also particularly important if you’re on Windows, I believe.
Much the best way is
- compile to RTF or DOCX,
- open it in your word processor,
- check it through — you might be surprised how many errors you spot when you look at a document in different software,
- then, when you’re satisfied, print/export to PDF from there.

Thank you.
I’m using a Mac, OS Sequoia 15.3.2.
Scrivener 3.4 (16639).
Do post if you need any help sorting out Compile.

Thank you, you’re very kind.
Hi, I now have some questions. As a test I compiled a PDF, here’s the parameters:
PDF
Paperback (6" x 9")
Compile Manuscript
Add front matter (paperback) - Ticked
I inserted 4 JPG’s into the Scrivening, centered them, and added text below each JPG.
When I open the compiled PDF I have a very large 1 on the first page about 1/3 of the way down, centered.
And I have three asterisks below the text on three out of four of the graphics.
Please advise what I may be doing wrong.
Many thanks.
Jack.
